Perfect Popcorn Recipe #3 ~ Surprisingly Good Seasoned Popcorn

This popcorn seasoning recipe is all natural and totally addictive. Everywhere we take it someone asks us for the recipe - so glad I made the mistake I did to come up with this best popcorn recipe!

Looking for a popcorn topping that’s more than typical butter and salt but without all the added icky artificial flavoring and colors?

We LOVE popcorn.

Sweet, salty, nutty…basically every which way.  We LOVE it.

But as a whole foodie family, we do not love the icky chemical fake stuff that most popcorn toppings are made of.

Well, great things often come as the result of mistakes.   That includes great popcorn seasoning recipes. :-)  Like this one.  It just might be the best popcorn topping you have ever tasted.

Yes, good things often come from mistakes.  Just like Chat Masala, our family’s beloved Indian seasoning, which came about when I mistakenly mixed spices in the wrong proportions. (It’s amazing and if you haven’t tried it yet, hop on over there and do so.)

Well, for you trivia buffs, here is part of an article from Associated Content on other great inventions that were the result of mistakes, one of them being penicillin.

Amongst all of the above mentioned inventions, penicillin is the best invention ever created by a mistake. In 1928 Scientist Alexander Fleming decided to go on a vacation without cleaning his workstation. On returning we saw a strange fungus on some of his cultures. He also noticed that the bacteria didn’t thrive close to those cultures. Till today, penicillin is one of the most widely used antibiotics in the world.

Now, I for sure do not expect that my seasoned popcorn “invention” will make it into the next Associated Content article, but I will say that it has been a huge hit wherever it has been served.  And I mean it.

Wherever we take this popcorn (and we take it EVERYWHERE), people ask us for the recipe.  I’ve even been told it is seriously addictive.

This great popcorn seasoning originated one day when we were preparing popcorn to take to an outing.

We’ve been avoiding gluten (so pretzels are out of the question [except for the gluten-free ones that cost a small fortune!]) and we avoid MSG type stuff and artificial cheezey flavor that is on simply every variety of Doritoes and such snack foods.  Our third-tiered snack food concern is GMO corn.

I am not as hard-lined about this as I am about the other issues that I just mentioned, but I really like to avoid regular corn chips for that reason.  So, if we are going somewhere where there will likely be lots of “not OK snack foods”, we often bring our organic popcorn.

Well, you might remember from my Perfect Popcorn Recipe #2 post that we usually top our popcorn with a special blend of Herbes de Provence with added garlic and onion.  On this particular day, however, our well had run dry — (meaning our container of popcorn topping was empty) and I mistakenly pulled out a similar container and proceeded to top our popcorn with–

Homemade Vegetable Broth Mix!!

Well, being the Charlie Brown type personality that I can be sometimes, I was quite discouraged, but as it turned out I had come upon a culinary advance for all mankind :-).  Surprisingly Good Popcorn Seasoning was born.

    I must tell you though, that in our gluten free world, most of us in our family actully like gluten free pretzels even more than the regular ones. Just an fyi. :)

      Yes, we like the gluten-free pretzels too, but we mainly avoid them due to their cost (ouch!) and the fact that they are made almost entirely of starch and we are trying to eat whole grains. That being said, they are tasty! Thanks for stopping by!

    I just stumbled upon your blog in searching for a natural popcorn seasoning. We are having a “movie night” at our business Wednesday night, and I decided to make popcorn, rather than buy it. I want something special for the popcorn, that would be appealing to all tastes. Would you suggest this recipe, or the Herbes de Provence?     • Hi Nikki. Hmmmm….hard to say. I think they are both wonderful and they even taste great mixed. I don’t think you could go wrong. The only thing I will say is that the “special seasoning” one can be a little spicy if you include the pepper in it. My youngest is sensitive to spicy foods and he commented negatively to popcorn with the seasoning the first time that I put it on (when it had pepper in it), but he later asked for more :-). I don’t cook much with pepper because of him and because I have read that it is hard on one’s digestive system and we could all use a little bit of TLC in that area :-).

  22. Sorry to bother you again, I decided to go with the Provence blend, the only problem is that I don’t know how much salt to use! I can’t eat corn, so I can’t taste it, and I’m cooking for 20 other people that I’m trying to impress;) Could you suggest an amount of salt to add in the recipe for the Provence? I’m actually making the popcorn soon, so you may not even be available to answer.

    • Oh, you’re no bother….and you’re lucky. I was supposed to be out, but we missed a deadline :-). I just sprinkle it on top along with the spice mix. I have honestly never measured it :-). I think you’ll be fine. After I sprinkle both on, I toss the popcorn around a bit so that it coats all of the corn. I so hope they like it. We honestly take our popcorn everywhere!

  24. It’s official — we don’t make nearly enough popcorn! This sounds really interesting and I’m sure that seasoning tastes great on all sorts of things. I’m a huge fan of making my own blends, partially because we’re in Germany and you just can’t get blends like you do in the US. And partially because they’re way healthier without extra unnecessary flavor boosters, and you can tweak them just the way you want them. ;)

    • I hope you like it Tiffany! Where are you in Germany? I visited Munich and Heidelberg in my- ahem – younger days. Saw Dachau too. Nothing to celebrate, but in my opinion, a must see.

      • We live near Frankfurt. It’s not one of those cities you need to visit…like Munich! ;) My MIL grew up near Dachau and a lot of Germans refuse to go near the camps because they have been shamed for so many years. So I’ve never been there but always been interested.

        • Oh, I’m sure Frankfurt would be wonderful – I really enjoyed Germany. I honestly don’t think the Germans need to be ashamed. I think the Holocaust needs to be remembered. If the German people are sorry that is what matters. We all have the capability for that kind of evil in our hearts (to quote Corrie ten Boom). You should visit if you get a chance.

Sometimes kitchen mistakes really make for better food – I mistakenly spilled some falafel spice (bought at my favorite place in NYC Kalustyan’s) on my tuna salad many years ago and now we can’t eat tuna any other way. This sounds outstanding. Always trying to find a new popcorn recipe that I like. Lime and Chile is delicious but this sounds outstanding. Thanks.

    • Hello Risa. We used to make Chili Lime Popcorn as well. I must say, however, that this is a clear winner for us. Hope you think so too! I love falafel! Wonder about that mixture :-). It’d be great to be able to recreate it!

    for the corn sensitive people sorghum can be popped and is like a mini size it smoked when popped but no burnt taste to it.

    • I’ve seen that. Does it really work? I saw popped sorghum online and in a nearby Indian store. Looked great! Is it hard to pop yourself? Can you use a regular popper?

        It won’t work with a “regular” air popper but any of the pot or pot stirrers will and somewhere there is a sorghum air popper. I think its amaranth but there is another grain that will pop too……..

    By the way, have you ever seen Unique brand Sprouted Wheat Pretzels?
    They can be somewhat pricey also, but they are delicious. I am able to get them at one of the stalls in our Amish Farmers Market and they are cheaper thnt our two local health food stores

    • Haven’t seen those. I don’t typically buy anything pricey and processed. Can’t make myself – oh and we’re GF right now. My popper isn’t Whirley Pop b/c I found out it’s made of aluminum – I bought a stainless steel one instead. I love it! Thanks for sharing!

  34. Try topping popcorn with nutritional yeast (small flake) — it makes it taste cheesy – that’s our favorite way around here!

  35. I know this is not healthy, but we love our popcorn with butter and parmesan cheese.

  36. How do you get your spices to stick to the popcorn? When I make it , it falls to the bottom of the bowl.

    • If you put the spices on right after popping, while it’s still hot, the warmed oil will help it to stick. If you don’t use oil it won’t stick. Hope that helps!

    This recipe iiis delicious. The only thing I did different the 2nd time around was after mixing it all, I put it in the small coffee grinder. It sticks better that way. I love popcorn, now it’s even better. Grassfed butter, organic non gmo popcorn(even better when the FM has some) and your own seasoning. Doesn’t get much better than that!
