This Powdered Vegetable Broth Recipe is incredibly delicious and wholesome with none of the additives of store bought broth cubes and packets. Plus it makes a great All-Purpose Homemade Seasoning to boot!
The Vegetable Broth Powder that I'm sharing today is literally one of our favorite recipes of all time. It's great as a substitute for any recipe that calls for broth, but also doubles as a fantastic all-purpose seasoning.
I love making my own homemade seasonings. By making your own celery salt, curry powder, taco seasoning, and more, you can be in control of the ingredients you use while you save money over buying pre-mixed containers at the store.
While I am quite the fan of stock and just made homemade turkey stock a few weeks ago, I am trying to be balanced and I do not always have time to make stock, nor can I justify the expense of purchasing boxed stock all the time. However, I am considering it. This is one area of my family's menu planning where I am still sorting out what to do.
This is, instead, a recipe for your own vegetable broth powder.
In my mother's pantry there were those terrible little fake orange colored vegetable broth powder cubes with a plethora of ingredients (including MSG and hydrolyzed lot of stuff) that would make any self-respecting person-in-search-of-a-healthier-lifestyle's hair stand on end.
When we moved to Michigan I started purchasing organic vegetable broth cubes and powders by the case in order to save a bit of money while keeping the convenience of the mix.
One day, however, it occurred to me that I could probably make my own vegetable broth powder. In fact, this is how my brain usually works.
I look at a food or personal care item and wonder if there might be a way that I could make it myself. Sometimes I am right and I find a great new project. Sometimes I am able to make something myself, but it isn't worth the time or money. Sometimes I'm just stuck with what I can buy.
The vegetable broth mix attempt was a winner, though I must say that I have another idea in mind to make it better and healthier, but it will be awhile before I try it. I will be sure to share the results once I do.
I spent some time and tried a few recipes until I found one that I really liked on cdkitchen.com. It has been in my pantry ever since and I recommend that you put it in yours as well.
You can use this vegetable broth powder to not only make vegetable broth, but also as an all-purpose seasoning. I love it on vegetables, meats, basically anything savory...even on popcorn!
If you would prefer to buy bone broth, here is a great place to buy it (you can also find this brand on Amazon).
I really prefer to make my own seasonings whenever I can. It allows flexibility and control over the ingredient proportions but also has you keeping fewer raw ingredients in your pantry.
You'll also use your spices up more quickly, so they're less likely to go stale.
You can also take advantage of bulk discounts by purchasing your spices in larger quantities, knowing that you will be using them up more quickly. Read my post on Homemade Seasoning Blends to find out more.
What You Will Need
- Celery Salt (see Homemade Celery Salt and How to Use It)
- Dried Parsley Flakes
- Garlic Powder
- Salt
- Ground Savory (use summer savory -- not the winter variety. If necessary, you can substitute thyme, marjoram, or sage)
- Dried Marjoram
- Dried Thyme
- Pepper
- Turmeric
- Ground Sage
Recipe Notes and Substitutions
- Teaspoon: Store a small measuring teaspoon in your container so that you are not continually washing a rewashing the same spoon as I use this mixture so often. (See my post on saving time with tools for more ideas for your spoons!)
- Multiple Batches: Make this in 2-3 batches at a time. Again, saves preparation time.
- Celery Salt: Here's how to make Homemade Celery Salt.
- Savory Substitutes: If you can't find savory, you can try subbing thyme or thyme plus a little rosemary. I haven't tried it but I've read it's a decent substitution.
- Spice Brand: Where do I buy my spices? Most of my spices are Frontier brand.
- AIP: For AIP, try making Homemade Celery Salt using celery leaves instead of seeds and omit the pepper.

- 2 tsp dried marjoram
- 2 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tsp pepper
- 1 tsp turmeric

So awesome! Thank you
You are so welcome!! Feel free to leave a star rating if you are so inclined. You made my day!!
I thought I left the star rating with my second message (that is why there are two separate messages from me); I'm trying the stars again.
It worked! Not sure how important these are but thanks for trying!
Adrienne this recipe is just what I've been looking for! It is delicious and the flavors are amazing together. I've been making my own concoction of vegetable bouillon for years; but this is my go to now. The celery salt adds such a nice flavor (and I had tons of that around due to making Caesar drinks); and I had never heard of Summer Savory and wow is it every tasty. We don't normally eat added salt; so I left out the salt because the Celery Salt has enough for us. Thank you so very much.
Caesar drinks? I didn't even know what that was! So glad you liked it!!! You are so welcome. We love it too!!
This recipe sounds perfect, except that I don't keep turmeric (not a fan) or marjoram (typically sub oregano) on hand. Are both necessary necessary or is there a replacement I could use?
I would maybe try cumin for this application, but a bit less?
Wish I could, but don't have that either. I don't really do "spicy" spices, if that makes sense. Is there something specific, flavor-wise the turmeric is adding here or could I just leave it out? Any advice appreciated. Thanks!
Hi again. Cumin isn't really spicy at all. I can't really say---I have done this with a few variations like leaving out one or 2 things, and it's still tasted good so you might wish to try and see what happens. I would just try only 1 batch, however, in case you don't like it!
Thank you!!!!! I love finding seasoning recipes to use all the little pots Iโve got in my cupboard. Already have a fajita, taco , seasoning salt and poultry seasoning going on. Really happy to have this one too.
You are so welcome! More to come!
Love the broth recipe! It's just what I'm looking for to replace the expensive little packets of flavored "drinking broth". Think of it like hot tea, only vegetable flavored, in little tea bags. I'm definitely going to try your recipe.
Thank you and I hope you like it! This might be quite a bit more salty than what you are used to and I've never tried drinking it but it tastes lovely on so many things!
Oh My Grrrl!! I had no idea there was anyone as 'special' as me out there!! I have already made a pumpkin pie spice blend & a taco seasoning spice blend of my own! Excited to compare and contrast! YOU ROCK GRRRL!!!
Looking forward to using Your soup base seasoning! Can totally see where it will work for all things including popcorn! I am having such fun checking out Your site and Your recipes! Getting some new ideas!
I LOVE learning and growing and all the work & diligence You do in documenting and sharing Your brilliance may not be making You as much money as Your deserve but I am in LOVE more and more with the internet and how small it has made the world in terms of the ability to learn from so many ppl of like mind!!! What a true blessing You are to so many. I am praying that enough money will come in to keep You afloat. I will continue looking for a ebook or some way I can make sure You make something for all the wonderful ideas You have given me.
KUDOS and endless gratitude dear Sister of like nutritional mindedness!!!!
Awwwww---well, that is a boost for sure. You are welcome to come back and toss all the affirmations my way anytime you like :).
We are doing find financially now but I can tell you that due to some "things" going on on the internet, natural living sites in general aren't doing as well these days. I lost about 1/2 my traffic from a year ago---it's a lot of things but I'm doing my best to return :). If you would like to share that would be great. But sooo appreciate your encouragement. Really. Thank you!
Would this work well as a broth for vegetarian โchickenโ noodle soup? I realize that might sound silly. ? I love the veggie organic Better Than Bouillon, but it has quite a rich flavour that isnโt always what Iโm looking for.
I think it would taste great and that isn't a silly question at all. I can't comment about the flavor being too strong or not. I would recommend taste testing and I hope you enjoy it!
This worked great! Got home and realize I didn't have vegetable broth, and definitely didn't want to go back to the grocery store. Even though I didn't have all the ingredients (subbed Italian seasoning since many of same ingredients) and it worked super! I may not be buying broth anymore.
Thank you!
So glad to hear it and glad the sub worked out well. I'm adding that tip to the post! Hope to see you around again soon!
You're very welcome =)
You will, I've bookmarked it!
:). Great! You might enjoy this as well: https://wholenewmom.com/recipes/chat-masala/
and this post has loads of options: https://wholenewmom.com/recipes/homemade-spice-mixes/
I love this recipe. It tastes great sprinkled on vege stir-fry.
Since you like to work with making spice mixes, I was wondering if you've ever done a vegan beef-like mix? I have a great one for chicken-like, but don't have a beef one for vegan stroganoff.
I did once and it didn't work but maybe I can try it again! I think it had worcestershire in it.....
very inspiring.,,,
Hello! I live in Japan and I am wondering if I could make homemade vegetable broth.
There is no majorum or celery seeds in my supermarket, so I wonder what are good replacements?
There are many other spices such as thyme, sage, rosemary, etc.
Hello there! I used to live in Japan! Konnichi wa! Oregano is a pretty good sub for the marjoram. Caraway or Dill might be good options for the celery seed but not sure - it's going to give a much different taste. You might opt for parsley in my opinion.
Hello! I apologize for the late reply!
You lived in Japan too? Nice! ๐
I actually managed to find marjoram in my supermarket (shock!) and I ordered celery salt on Amazon! Amazon is a lifesaver! I will try making your vegetable broth powder this weekend and test how it tastes! Thank you!
Hope you like it!!!
Hi! I forgot to reply! I have been using your vegetable stock powder in various slow cooker stews and it tastes great! Once it runs out, I want to try it out with carrot powder.
I've had a lot of luck with grinding down freeze dried veggies as well, and adding similar herbs and spices to your blend. Carrot, onion, bell pepper, celery and even tomato go really well. You don't get a clear broth, so I do homemade pressure cooker broth for soups that have that, but in a split pea soup or something, this is an absolute winner.
This is a fantastic recipe and completely replaces broth! All vegan broths/cubes contain salt and preservatives that are corn derived, which I am highly allergic to. I am also allergic to celery, so I modified your recipe and wanted to share this with you.
In lieu of celery salt, I use:
*1 tablespoon extra fine sea salt
*2 tablespoons RAW organic CARROT POWDER
*2 teaspoons organic ground onion powder
*1 teaspoon organic ground Mace ( found at Whole foods, I haven't used the ebtire 6 teaspoon box in 8 months, so it was worth not paying shipping).
Most vegan cubes contain carrot and mace. Mace adds depth that is missing due to lack of celery. Carrot just tastes BETTER in broth, so that was a no brainier for me. I personally like onion powder and use it a LOT, so I added it to the reipe. Your recipe is fantastic and can be purchased from frontier ( except savoury) and frugal. I followed in suit and purchased 5pound bag raw organic CARROT POWDER, onion powder in bulk and that tiny amount of mace... I tried one broth bowl without the mace before I added it, and it really kicked up the depth.
Thank you!!! No more anaphylaxis and I can enjoy a nice bowl of broth or make all my lovely soups again ?
So great - thank you for sharing!!!!
Do you have a new and updated version of this recipe for veggie broth mix?
Thank you.
No, I don't. Is there something you think should be updated?

Thanks. Please do share.
That was a quote from the article--you mentioned updating it with another idea you had?
Thanks. No updates yet!
Hello Adrienne.
I was wondering do you have a recipe you can share for BONE BROTHS?
yes im vegetarian but im interested in the broths for healing thank u
Yes, this post should help. https://wholenewmom.com/recipes/how-to-make-bone-broth-chicken-broth-recipe/
Love your blog and this recipe, however the 6 tsp in this recipe makes me question my cooking and math skills. 2 T may be easier! ๐
Thanks for the kind words. I'm not sure why I did that....it was a very old post. Probably just multiplied it out and didn't think about it. Changed :).
