What Company Has the Best Essential Oils?

Are you wanting to start using essential oils, but don't know where to start? You're ready to buy, but don't know what company has the best essential oils?
You've come to the right place.

Essential oils are all the rage these days. People say that they can do everything from being a natural ear infection remedy, to helping with weight loss, to healing eczema, and more.
I've written various posts on essential oils in which I talked about:
- Are Essential Oils a Scam and
- Using Essential Oils for Tummy Aches, Head Tension and More (with more of my skeptical thoughts)
Hopefully you can tell by those posts that I'm a skeptic at heart and pretty detailed when it comes to sorting through all the information out there to find out what really works. In fact, many of my readers and friends have called me an “investigative reporter” of sorts.
My husband says that I “second guess everything.”
In one sense, second guessing is a good thing. I've saved our family a lot of money by avoiding problematic purchases.
But sometimes I can go overboard and spend way too much time analyzing a product or purchase. (Kind of like driving all over town to save a few pennies. Not smart, especially as I saw gas at $4.11/gallon coming home from church last night. Big sigh.)
When trying to sort out this issue about which essential oils company is best, I tried not to be too analytical at first, and simply used what worked. But then, things changed.

The Search for the Best Essential Oil
In the Are Essential Oils a Scam? – A Skeptic Looks at Thieves Oil, I shared how I held off trying really any essential oils at all for years before trying Thieves® from Young Living.
Truth be told, I did have a few old bottles of essential oils in my linen closet. One bottle each of orange, eucalyptus, melaleuca (tea tree) oil, and rose oil, which I bought for topical use to brighten up my laundry [ended up never using it] and for my Homemade Chest Rub and Homemade Rose Water Spray.
This time around, before buying the Thieves oil and signing up as a Young Living Distributor, I dug around a little, but not too much.
I asked about all the rumors surrounding Gary Young, the founder of Young Living and I also asked some questions about purity of essential oils.
I got some satisfactory answers and was pretty amazed at how well the Thieves oil had worked. And I was thrilled to have great resources in my natural health care arsenal.
I mean, who wants to put more toxins in your body if you don't have to, right?
However, after my post on Young Living's Thieves and the other oils (Wintergreen and Peppermint, etc.), a number of readers started asking me about other oil companies. And so I too started wondering.
At first, I thought, “This stuff works great, and I'm pretty worn out right now, so I am just going to leave this alone and not start digging for more information”
But the “investigative reporter” in me just couldn't leave. it. alone.
So I started poking around.
Today I'm sharing with you the beginning of my investigation.
Other Essential Oils Companies
There were some essential oils companies that I knew of, and some that a few readers recommended to me.
One of my readers was a doTERRA rep who said I really should check out their company to see how it measured up to Young Living.
Little did I know what lay ahead of me.
I started out with just a small list of companies, but the list quickly grew as the series went on and as more and more readers commented and as I went down more and more rabbit trails.
I think you'll find the whole thing interesting and I hope you'll learn a thing or two about essential oils and the companies that sell them.
The Competitors:
(UPDATE: A lot changed after I started this series. Please follow the links at the bottom of this post to see how interesting everything got – you can hop on over to read Part 2 of “The Best Essential Oils” here.
To start off, following are the essential oils companies that were “on my radar” and so I started with these, wondering if I should stick with Young Living or switch to another company to be my family's “best essential oils company” of choice
- Mountain Rose Herbs
- Aura Cacia
- DoTerra
- Young Living
- Heritage Oils
- Native American Nutritionals (now Rocky Mountain Oils)
- North American Herb and Spice
and more. Truth is, I called a TON of companies and read up on others. These all included: - NOW oils
- Butterfly Express
- Spark Naturals
- Edens Garden
- North American Herb and Spice, and on and on.My head really started to spin with all of the phone calls and notes I was taking, but I started with just those listed above and went from there.
This is not an exhaustive list as there are a TON of essential oils companies out there. After writing this series I felt like I really opened a can of worms, but these are the companies that I started with.
Hang with me – it gets pretty interesting from here on out.
IMPORTANT UPDATE
I'm updating this post years later to add important information. I do not have all of the information in this series on why I didn't choose certain companies so I would appreciate you not accusing me of coming to silly conclusions. I have gotten threatening emails (some of them were cryptic threats), and have been warned about being sued if I published certain things.
My family is important to me and while I don't like to succumb to this kind of bullying, I have to weigh the cost of all of this. I am trying to be as upfront as I can about my decisions. Just know that what you are reading here is not the whole story. Not at all.
The Challenge
Following are some of the companies that I looked into.
1. Young Living Oils
I first tried Young Living when I thought that essential oils were a scam. I used them for a while and since I wanted to get as many savings as possible on the oils, I purchased monthly, took advantage of discounts, and stocked up quite a bit.
2. doTERRA Oils
Just before starting this series, several of my readers told me that I should really look into doTERRA as well, before making a hard and fast decision about which company to go with long term. So, I signed up with doTERRA as well. Follow along and you will see what happened next.
3. Mountain Rose Herbs
I like Mountain Rose Herbs' mission and have a few bottles of their oils. When I contacted them they told me that they did not recommend internal use of their oils as they were not produced in a food-grade facility.
Much later (after this whole series was done) I contacted them again and they said that this was not the case. The company also told me several times at later dates that they didn't test their oils but trusted their sources.
4. Butterfly Express
This seemed like a good company to check out, but I ran into quite a bit of trouble getting information from them. When I called to ask them a number of questions, I was able to get some information, but then I was told that they didn't have time to talk with me.
5. Native American Nutritionals (now Rocky Mountain Oils)
When I first contacted this company, I thought that their prices seemed a little high for a company that wasn't an MLM, but the more I talked to them the more interesting it all got.
You'll have to read more in the series to see what happened with this company….
THE VERDICT: Probable high quality with no apparent earnings opportunity. Need to check into this company more.
6. North American Herb and Spice
From all I could figure out, this is a great company.
However, all they make is oregano oil.
So if you just want oregano oil, then this is a good place to turn.
THE VERDICT: Oregano is a pretty amazing oil, but I want more than just that in my natural healing arsenal.
7. Aura Cacia
I personally have a number of Aura Cacia oils that I bought prior to really digging into oils. I can't say anything except for my personal experience which is that they don't smell as potent as some of the other oils that I have.
I do like the company but for now, I'm not choosing to get my oils from them. That being said, I think that they have a lot of great information about oils and their use.
Well, this is a long enough post already – thanks for sticking with me!
Onto the other competitors in the next post and see what happens!
A Great Essential Oils Book for Your Library
There are so many books out there on essential oils, that it's hard to know what to buy. I have a bunch, but this one, The Encyclopedia of Essential Oils, is a fantastic choice. It's very highly recommended by many aromatherapists.
At the bottom of each of my posts in this series are books or other kinds of products that I love that relate to essential oils.
The Essential Oil Company I Prefer

What are your thoughts?

First of all, thank you for all you research. Although I am a skeptic in most instances, I do take advice into account when making decisions.
I have several friends who have used and are using YL products. I wanted to do my own research before jumping into something that I had only “heard” about. I have used essential oils for a while, but I had not diffused them in the past. So, in that sense, I am just starting out.
One thing that bothered me about the YL products was their selling point of “seed to seal”.. This bothered me because I know when there is complete control over a product, there could be corruption. They also do their own testing. I am open to whatever the YL reps on this blog have to say, but to me, this seems like there is no third party looking out for my best interests. Just an opinion. If they grow, process and seal the product, who is to say it is really what it says it is. From many years of researching everything that I have questions about, I have found that you can find research to back up any claim you might have. I guess I am just skeptical of the pricing. I know EO’s are expensive, but YL is so much more expensive that I could never afford it for our family. Being a homeschool mom, my job is to figure out how to run a healthy, happy home on one income. I don’t mind paying more for something that you can prove is better for the health of my family, but I have not seen proof. The oils are good, okay, but are they twice as good as others? The price is twice as much as others. Just wondering.
Other question is ingestion. Okay, I know that some EO’s are dangerous to ingest. However, we are breathing it into our lungs and won’t that get into our bloodstream and eventually into our cells? I get that ingesting is different than inhaling. I know that ingesting is more concentrated. How can I tell if the oil that I am putting into my body via inhalation is safe? Is there any way to know that any of these products are what they say they are? Because there is no regulation or standards, how do I know that they are not putting dangerous chemicals into these? If they just put a little, can they still say it is 100%.
I guess I just want to know that what I am doing is safe for my family before I subject them to these oils.
Thank you
I agree w/ you on the Seed to Seal, of course it sounds great, but they could do whatever they want. Hard to know what to think.
Ingesting is more concentrated than inhaling but still you want to have good quality for either.
I went w/ Native American for numerous reasons. Did you get through the entire series and did you see the guide I just came out with? https://wholenewmom.com/10-things-you-need-to-know-about-essential-oils-before-you-buy/
I hope to have a new post up soon with more info. Stay tuned :).
How does using rosemary oil help the adrenal glands and to stimulate hair growth?
Hi there. I read in several places that putting rosemary and clove on your adrenals is helpful – and that putting rosemary topically on your scalp can encourage growth. I personally have put it in water and put some on my scalp before bed. I think it worked some. I have more thoughts on hair growth – I need to write a post on it :).
Check out Ameo Essential Oils. The only clinically pure essential oils. So much better than all the competition. I use so much less than the others. Email me for more info.
Hi there. I am getting a TON of comments with links to Ameo sites and Emails soliciting my readers to check out this company. I am sorry but I am very upset about this. I established this blog to be a resource for folks to learn – not as a platform for others to try to build their MLM business here. Please refrain from doing this in the future or I will have to ban you from my site. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
Good as you set up this site “for folks to learn” as an Australian I purchase some specific Australian oils… like organic special eucalypts and Australian Sandalwood, both sustainably sourced, grown and managed for more than a 100 years direct from the distillers. Clearly there are High End products out there and those who supply more than the 5ml and 25 ml buyers and rely on absolute integrity or they lose clients. Just as clearly Pyramid Marketing and bottom of the supply line sold in Health food shops are battling to supply quality at the market price let alone meaningful information.
Adrienne if you are representing Native American Oils its probably better to be transparent because they too have their place as suppliers.
Hi Janet. I am sorry but I don’t understand what you are saying here. What do you think I am not being transparent about? I am not sure I understand the rest of your comment either – about “good as you set up this site” and the rest. Could you please rephrase your comment? Thanks!
Adrienne I googled Native American and there you were on the page just below them.
Below you another troll very likely paid to promote Native American Oils,
Transparent in this context means being honest about being a promoter of those oils.
Hi Janet. I am glad to interact but I take this accusation seriously. I am not a troll nor am I not being honest about whom I am promoting. I was clear about the process from the beginning and am being transparent about it now. I was told by a doTERRA rep that I could stand to make $8000 per month if I stayed with them. Of course, that was very tempting. I wrestled with this whole thing for many many days. I finally had to leave them and went with a company that didn’t even have an affiliate program. I asked them if there was something we could work out and they agreed.
It was a big risk for me but I thought it was the right thing to do.
I am sorry but I don’t see anything wrong with that or anything not transparent.
The term “[internet] troll” means, according to wikipedia, “s a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people,[1] by posting inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[4]”. In fact, Janet, it seems that you fit the description of the troll – I don’t mean to be accusatory here, but you have commented on numerous threads here and are being argumentative with me. I don’t have a problem with someone addressing their concerns to me, but I do find it to be interesting that in your comment above you appear to be accusing me of being a troll since you used the words “another troll”.
I am open to being corrected, so please tell me if I am wrong.
Is there a problem with my being 2nd on Google after Native American? I would think that most people would much prefer to be 2nd on the list on a search for doTERRA or Young Living. Not many folks are searching for Native American Oils by comparison :).
Thanks again.
Hi Adrienne,
I have so appreciated your WELL RESEARCHED article about EO’s. I have been curious about EO’s since I read your post earlier this year. I was invited to a doTerra class in August and the rep was very knowledgeable, so I bought in. I sent her your link to ask her thoughts about it and she came back with a ‘story’…typical sales rep type. From there it continued downhill. Communication was awful, orders not explained adequately, unwanted auto-ships, false promises, crazy attempted conf calls, return policy, etc… I am so disappointed with that company. I am sure lots of people have great luck with them and are happy. But when something continues to feel upstream, I back out. I keep coming back to you! I trust my intuition and your post feels trustworthy and downstream! (downstream=good; upstream=not good) 😉 I will stick with your recommendation and give EO’s another chance. I saw another post where the DT rep suggested doing your own research and not just reading a blog for info.Well, I for one am grateful someone else took the time to research so I don’t have too! I think I am intelligent enough to be able to discern good information. Looking forward to working with NAN and placing my first order! Peace & Blessings, Lisa
Thank you! What a blessing your comment is. I have more to come – working on a new post right now. And then another should follow in the near future. Did you happen to see my new guide to buying Essential Oils? Hope to see you around again!

I’ve also gone through the same gamut of EO companies and have been extremely happy with “Ananda Apothecary” for quite a few years. Their customer service, shipping, price, and quality is outstanding. No, I do not work-for or represent the company. I’m just a loyal EO user who has spent probably thousands of dollars in various product brands and have settled on this company as an absolute favorite and have been pretty loyal. Their information is excellent and pretty thorough. I’m also extremely happy that they have recently come out with a Hemp based EO, legal to ship to all 50 states, that has already been proven (according to the testimonials I’ve read so far) to help many extreme and chronic pain issues. It’s very expensive and I haven’t tried it myself, but I’m always happy to see how they seem to be very progressive and always working toward advancement in learning and producing more kinds of EO’s for health remedies and prevention.
HI there. Thanks for commenting. I didn’t choose Ananda for several reasons.
Anyhow, I am glad you found something you like. You might be interested in my new EO guide. Thanks. I don’t know if you left your real email as you didn’t leave your real name and your email looks “odd” but perhaps you will get this.
Thanks.https://wholenewmom.com/10-things-you-need-to-know-about-essential-oils-before-you-buy/
I think it is important to know where the plant is grown and be able to follow the process to the sealing of the bottle. I have not done extensive research, but I DO KNOW that Young Living Essential Oils have specific growing fields (all disclosed), plants that are toured and maintained for organic oils. It’s called, From Seed to Seal. That is the kind of info I want. I don’t want oils from some plants that are treated with chemicals or come from some “unknown” origin. So, if other essential oil companies can attest to the same, I am willing to look at their information. Also, If other oils are marked to not take internally, I am worried about what else is in the oil. And if you can’t take it internally and you are putting it on your skin, which is absorbing it into your body…..Yikes! Just check out the oil very carefully before using. Did you know that a bottle of oil can be labeled 100% oil when only 10% is ACTUAL oil? The rest is additives. Be very careful. You can do more harm than good to your body.
Hi there. Native American discloses a lot of information about where their oils are from – location and whether or not they are organic / wild crafted, etc.
They are fine with internal use within reason. You might be interested in this report I just put out b/c you are bringing up some of the points that I wrote about :).

How do you ever go back to your post to see if you get a response. The post are all out of order and I can’t locate mine
I send a response to you – did you comment and not get one? I can check for you.
I thought I did but am not sure. I was asking your opinion of green valley aromatherapy
Thanks!

I used YL for two years before I found GoDesana. GoDesana is independently certified organic and all products are either organic or wild crafted. There is quite a line of singles and blends and I’ve never run into oils of this quality. It’s free to join, no kit required, and that in itself makes it more affordable. I would love to hear what you think about these oils. We also have the advantage of having Alexandria Brighton exclusively – we use Gas Chromatography testing, all are therapeutic grade and pure…. I would love to share this and get your feedback in the process….
Hi there. I can’t say one way or the other about this company but a few folks have brought them up.
You can read this post to see if they measure up https://wholenewmom.com/health-concerns/toxic-overload-health-concerns/essential-oils-testing-is-it-reliable/ – it shows how GC/MS isn’t the only thing to consider.

I was just curious about Barefut Oils in American Fork, Utah? do you know anything about their quality?

Windering about the company Plant Therapy. They claim to have the same quality of oils as the ones u listed but they are quite a bit cheaper. They compare their Germ Fighter with Thieves.
