Special Diet Alternatives for These Healthy Fourth of July Recipes
Low-carb: Use a low-carb sweetener when applicable. Try cauliflower or zucchini for beans in hummus / small chopped veggies for beans and corn in salads. Use guacamole instead of hummus for the appetizers. Use zoodles for the pasta in the pasta salads. Of course, the popcorn won’t work out but you can use the Dorito Seasoning for another snack topping–like on paleo chips.
The Mango Salsa and Sweet Potato Buns can’t be made low-carb, but you could make an Eggplant Bun instead or use this Flax Bread.
Swap out the mango in the slaw for another low-starch vegetable.
Instead of the corn on the cob, use the Avocado Dressing on grilled low-carb veggies instead.
Paleo: You can substitute other veggies for corn in salads and kabobs. For beans in hummus, try cauliflower or zucchini. Use zoodles for the pasta in the pasta salads. Use the Dorito Seasoning for another snack topping–like on paleo chips.
AIP: Sub other vegetables for nightshades. Follow the other paleo substitutions. Use an AIP guide to substituting spices where needed. The salsa would not be an option for AIP. The potato / green bean salad could be made with cauliflower dices and used for reintro if omitting the pepper. You would have to be really creative to make many of these recipes AIP, but some can work for sure with a some ingenuity!
I would love to hear which of these amazing dishes you hope to try! I can’t make my mind up–so all of them it is!
