Easy Delicious Vegetable Broth Powder

This Vegetable Broth Powder is going to literally knock your socks off (or if your socks don't come off, at least you'll be truly happy). It's incredibly delicious and wholesome with none of the additives in store-bought broth cubes and packets.
Plus it makes a great All-Purpose Homemade Seasoning that tastes great everything.

It's true that this spice blend is literally one of our favorite recipes of all time. It's great as a substitute for any recipe that calls for broth but also doubles as a fantastic all-purpose seasoning.
Growing up, my mom those terrible little fake orange-colored vegetable broth powder cubes with a plethora of ingredients (including MSG and hydrolyzed stuff) that would make any health-minded person's hair stand on end.
When we moved to Michigan I started purchasing organic vegetable broth cubes and powders by the case in order to save a bit of money while still having the convenience of a mix.

One day, however, it occurred to me that I could probably make my own vegetable broth powder.
And I was right. And here it is for you to enjoy as well.

- Many Uses: This recipe is not only great for using in recipes that call for broth, but it's a great seasoning to have on your table for putting on veggies, main dishes, and salads, but it makes a great popcorn seasoning recipe too! I haven't tried this yet, but it would be great on seasoned nuts!

What You Will Need
- Celery Salt (see Homemade Celery Salt)
- Dried Parsley Flakes
- Garlic Powder
- Salt
- Ground Savory (use summer savory: not the winter variety. If necessary, you can substitute thyme, marjoram, or sage)
- Dried Marjoram
- Dried Thyme
- Pepper
- Turmeric
- Ground Sage
Recipe Notes and Tips
- Multiple Batches: Make this in 2-3 batches at a time to save on preparation time.
- Savory Substitutes: If you can't find savory, you can try subbing thyme or thyme plus a little rosemary. I haven't tried them but that should make a decent substitution.
- AIP: For AIP, you can make Homemade Celery Salt using celery leaves instead of seeds and omit the pepper.
- Spice Brand: Most of my spices are Frontier brand.
- Measuring Spoon Tip: Store a small measuring spoon in your container so that you are not continually washing a rewashing the same spoon as I use this mixture so often. (See my post on saving time with tools for more ideas for your spoons!)

Vegetable Broth Powder
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons celery salt
- 4 tablespoons dried parsley flakes
- 4 tablespoons onion powder
- 2 tablespoons garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons salt
- 2 tablespoons ground savory (use summer savory — not the winter variety. If necessary, you can substitute thyme, marjoram, or sage)
- 2 teaspoons dried marjoram
- 2 teaspoons dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 1 teaspoon ground sage
- 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast (optional, but recommended)
Instructions
- Combine all in a small bowl. Store in glass or plastic container with a tight fitting lid. Stir or shake occasionally before use to redistribute ingredients.
- Use 1 teaspoon mix plus one cup of water to make 1 cup of broth in a recipe. You may substitute this for chicken broth/bouillon in recipes as well. 1 teaspoon is the equivalent of 1 bouillon cube.

What spice blends have you made?




This is way too much salt. We need to reduce the sodium in our diets. Tis leads to high blood pressure and will catch up with use as we age.
Hi Dolly. If you feel the need to cut back on the salt, by all means do so. From what I have been learning, the issue of salt is really convoluted and depends on the kind of salt you are using. Were you aware that most table salt has chemicals added to keep it free flowing? I’ve also seen salt w/ sugar added. There are some testimonials on the Real Salt site that might interest you: I have personally been eating a ton of salt and have no issues whatsoever.
Looks good, I will try it this weekend. Do you really need all that celery salt PLUS all that salt? Has anyone tried it? Has it been salty?
I use it all the time and then omit salt if the recipe calls for additional. As you may or may not have seen we also use it as a popcorn topping and it gets rave reviews all the time. I think there are a few comments of readers who have used it and been pleased. I hope you enjoy it! (I do like salt, but I haven’t had anyone complain yet :-).) I think if you use healthy salt (like the Real Salt) it is really good for you.

Hi Denise. There are two kinds of savory – summer and winter. I never knew that and only used to use “savory” – can you find just savory? If not try substituting thyme. :-).
I can’t find savory anything. There’s already thyme in it. Do you mean just add 6 t more to replace the summer savory? Thanks so much for your help. I’m actually trying to make chicken noodle soup as we speak 🙂
Oh – so sorry. I was out and just got back about 20 min ago. I would just add more thyme in the same amount as the savory.
No biggie. I just left it out altogether and it was fine. Nice improvement to my regular chicken soup. I shared the spices with my mom too.
I’m thinking of bumping up the turmeric a little. It’s my understanding that’s one of the best spices to eat but I don’t have many recipes that use it.

Finally! This is exactly what I was looking for. All I wanted was a recipe for chicken bouillon (or SOME kind of bouillon), and it took 15 minutes of intense Google searching to finally find a recipe (and I do know how to conduct a good search!). Every other result was telling me how to make broth, or what to buy at the store, and I couldn’t believe it was so hard to find a substitute for the seasonings themselves! I have looked into this with one company — Pacific Foods. Their chicken broth containers are not lined with BPA. So at least there is one good option out there :-).
There is a problem with those oh, so easy to use boxes of stock. They are lined with BPA. Probably best to make our own stock like Grandma did; except we have a crock-pot!
