Healthy Super Bowl Food Galore–Gluten-free and Vegan-ish

So the Superbowl is this weekend and you are scrambling to have some healthy options to munch on or serve to your guests.
The truth is, we may or may not be watching the Superbowl this year. We are really an ice hockey family and we get our fair share (or actually, much more than that) of sports each year (especially in the winter season) without football being added to it.
But if we can incorporate spending time with others and the football, then maybe we too will be watching the Big Bowl.
Just yesterday my son said, “You know, Mom, you really should write a post about Superbowl Foods. I see a lot of people writing posts on it!”
I hesitated, thinking that I’d just written Healthy Snacks to Nourish You on the Go, but decided to go ahead with this post for two reasons:
- There are things that wouldn’t classify as a snack that would be great for the Superbowl
- To celebrate my son’s great idea. Most of you know that he has autism (Asperger’s Syndrome). One of the reasons that I keep plugging along with this blog is that he helps me with a few “behind the scenes” things. Like:
- Helping with linking my site to blog hops
- Handling emails occasionally
- Proofreading my posts (sometimes)
- Updating my Recipes page with new recipes
I am just thrilled with how his autism has been healing and that, despite the fact that sometimes he messes something up and I wonder why oh why I am working on this with him, sometimes he really surprises me with a great idea. So – in honor of my son, here is a list of things that we think would be great additions to your Sunday celebration, with or without the Superbowl.
(Actually, I am wondering if he suggested this to make it more likely that we’ll say “yes” to letting him watch the Superbowl :-)! I probably will.)
So – on to the Healthy Superbowl Food Ideas!
I’ve got a list of recipes from my site that I think would be great additions, as well as some yumminess from some other great bloggers that you may wish to check out as well :-).
Enter your email & I'll send it straight to your inbox. Plus, you'll get healthy living updates too.
Healthy Super Bowl Recipes
“The Best” Garden Fresh Salsa
I had this salsa at a baptism and got the recipe.
Lost it and spent a lot of time looking for it. It is simply worth all the time I spent looking!
Baked Chicken Nuggets
These are super quick and taste like you spent a lot of time on them. Yum!
Serve with a side of Homemade Barbecue Sauce (from this post).
Super Savory Hummus
One of my closest friends says this is the best hummus she has ever had.
Fast and Yummy Bean Dip
I get a lot of requests for this recipe.
Focaccia Flax Bread
Great for dipping into the above dips or in my Almond Butter Fruit Dip (see below).
The Best Homemade Popcorn
I know, I talk about popcorn all. the. time. These popcorn recipes are really that good.
Chocolate / Carob Coated Almonds (or other nuts / seeds)
These are a great healthy alternative to traditional chocolate-covered almonds (one of my weaknesses).
You’ll need a little lead time on these so start soaking now.
Gluten-free Lemon Bars (gluten, egg and sugar-free options)
Who doesn’t love lemon bars? And now you can have them no matter your dietary restriction!
Almond Butter Fruit Dip
This Vegan Fruit Dip is a super fast and tasty dip using only a few ingredients so it comes together in a flash.
Great also as a drizzle for cakes, pancakes, ice cream–whatever!
Coconut Chocolate Chunk Macadamia Cookies
Whether you are grain-free or not, these little nuggets meld the goodness of coconut, macadamia and chocolate together for a wonderful treat. (Made with my Homemade Chocolate Chips.)
Silky Smooth Bean Fudge
Again, a duplicate of my Healthy Snacks post. Again – couldn’t resist. This recipe is a winner!
Healthy Lemonade (sugar-free)
Of course, you need something to drink along with all of the goodies.
Say “no” to sugar-laden soda pop and “yes” to this super-healthy and satisfying alternative.
Crispy Sweet Garbanzo Beans
I’ll for sure be making these soon!
Garlic-Lovers’ Guacamole
This Guacamole is one of the Easiest Guacamole recipes you will ever try, but it tastes amazing. Loaded with garlic and the perfect blend of spices, it beats any store-bought guac hands down
I hope these ideas get your creative juices flowing as to what you can serve your family and friends to satisfy both their desire for tasty treats and your desire to nourish their bodies.
And just in case you are wondering what we’ll be having, my sons’ requests this year are the Baked Chicken Nuggets :-)!
Will you be watching the Super Bowl this year?
Wish I had seen this post BEFORE the Super Bowl! These look great! Can’t wait to try out some of these recipes. 🙂
Sorry for it being “after” the Superbowl. 🙂 Thought I’d share anyway in case folks would like to try these recipes after the fact. Hope you like it!
Thanks for sharing these recipes! I’ll be pinning this one so I can find it again for our next party.
I tried the fudge recipe a few months ago and messed something up. It’s in my notes. However, I was able to turn my fail into okay brownies. They weren’t the best brownies, but nothing was wasted.m 🙂
I’m off to sign up for your mailing list to stay on top of your great posts!
Thanks, Barb – for your encouragement and for subscribing. I hope the fudge turns out for you again. We made it when we had friends over for the Superbowl. I don’t care for the football, but the fellowship was good. We made a mint variety and almond coconut – they were great!
Adrienne,
I want to thank you for the Traditional Tuesdays. It is a big hit for me on my site.I also had no idea you had a son with Asperger’s. I do also and I just love this post. I felt like I was reading about me. They do come up with amazing ideas! Kudos to him for this one! Gonna try them too. 🙂
Hi Lisa! Thanks for taking the time to share. I am glad to hear about the traffic to your site. You have great ideas that you share each week! Hang in there w/ the Asperger’s. We’ve had a really rough week of it. :-).
What a great selection of healthy snacks! Here in Oz we’re not up on the superbowl – but our footy season is soon to begin so these snacks will certainly come in useful then – and for school lunches too!
Thanks for linking to a Round Tuit!
Hope you have a fabulous week!

I’m not too up on the Superbowl myself anyway—-It’s a great reason to serve good food and get together with friends though. That’s what we did. I think I just watched the final few minutes :-).
Hi Adrienne,
I would love being at your party, I would never leave the food table. This is a great collection of recipes! Hope you are having a great week end and thank you so much for sharing with Full Plate Thursday.
Come Back Soon!
Miz Helen
Thanks, Helen. We actually had a hodge podge – nothing too special. We had a rough week so I didn’t have time for much. Fun anyway though. Take care.
Again with the perfect timing. I’ve been looking for seasoned popcorn ideas and I want to start making my own hummus. Thanks!
You’re welcome! So glad to have helped – hope you like them!
I’m not a major lover of lemon bars but the last time that my mom made some I was actually sad that I couldn’t have one. I would have to skip the coconut on top though 🙂 I will definitely have to try the lemon bars sometime, unfortunately (or maybe I should feel fortunate) I’ve found so many GF things to try that who knows when I’ll get to it, especially since it’s been a while since I’ve tried anything new
I’m the same way (about too many things to try). It’s fun having options but sometimes overwhelming. Hope you do sometime though – thanks for stopping by!
Great round up! So many healthy options with delicious recipes that will appeal to everyone.
Thank you, Alea!
Hi stopping by from fitness Friday, this food looks great making me hungry now 🙂
Thanks for stopping by!
These look like great ideas! Thanks! Probably aren’t watching the Super bowl this year, but I enjoy the food!
(here from Lunchbox Love)
Thanks, Steph! Turns out we may even have company coming to watch it now….better get some food prepared :-).
These look so good! I love that your son helps you with the blog – that’s awesome! Thanks for sharing these great food ideas!
New follower from the blog hop!
Thanks, Kathy! It is great. Some days I think, “Well, there are just so many blogs – why bother?” But that is one reason I like doing it. I think it’s great for him. :-).
I’m so glad your son suggested you do this post, Adrienne! It’s such a great resource for allergy friendly snacks for the Superbowl – or any social occasion! I especially like the look of your yummy Garden Fresh Salsa. Thank you for sharing this post with the Gallery of Favorites.
I miss watching the Superbowl here in the UK. Although I wasn’t a huge football fan, I liked the social side of it. Here, they don’t televise it on the main networks and it airs really late because of the time difference. Whatever you do this weekend, I hope you and your family have fun!
Thanks, April. It’s been so cute- he’s been watching my blog stats to see how “his post” is doing. He’s having a lot of anxiety today over an allergic reaction so it helps to have a nice diversion. Off to make lunch and try to focus on the positive….You have a great weekend as well.
Coming over from Jill’s Blog Hop. LOVE these recipes!! I’m coming back later to jot a few down for this weekend.
Thanks so much!!
Sandy
You’re so welcome, Sandy! I hope you like them! Take care!
How sweet that your son is helping you out with the blog. I just love it that this post was his idea 🙂
Thanks, Katie. He wanted to check the stats all day to see how the post that was his idea was doing :-).
Everything looks so good, I want to try them all!
Thanks, Lisa. Let me know if you do (not all in one day, of course!)
Wow-great list of treats for the big game! The lemon bars are calling out my name!
Hi Laura – I sure hope you like them!
I’ve been wanting to try that popcorn since you first posted it. All your snacks look delicious! And thanks so much for linking to the Sweet Potato Fries. Happy Superbowl! 😀
Hi Ricki! I’m sure you’ll love the popcorn. Just be ready to limit yourself! I love your fries ideas! I have a savory recipe for them that goes great w/ my hummus – but haven’t gotten around to a post yet – you are welcome! I love your recipes!
Thank you so much for the mention of my crispy sweet garbanzo beans! I know you will LOVE them! I also ahve a garlic parmesan recipe as well, in fact my kiddies even prefer it over the sweet ones!
Hi Brenda! I saw the other recipes as well! We are just not eating dairy due to my son’s dairy allergy, but I can try to sub a non dairy options that I am sure would work. You are so welcome! Wish I had even more time to peruse other blogs :-).
Oh yum! These look great!! I can’t wait to try that bean fudge!! I’ve made bean cookies and brownies, but not fudge, I’ll have to try that. I’ll be watching the super bowl, but mainly enjoying the treats!! 🙂
Hi Chelsea. I have to say that this bean recipe tops all the cookie and brownie recipes that I’ve tried. Hope you agree! If you have a great recipe you’d like to share I’m game :-). (Pun intended :-).)
The chicken nuggets sure look good. Haven’t had those in a long time!
Hope you like them!
