Got dry, chapped lips? This Nourishing Homemade Lip Scrub will smooth and soften them to near perfection. Sooo healthy and natural--you can even eat it :)!

This Homemade Lip Scrub is super nourishing, smoothes your lips to perfection and is so healthy you can literally eat it! And since it's going on your lips, that's how things should be, right?

Making your own personal care products is one of the best ways for you to keep toxins out of your body.  Some of my favorite homemade personal care items are alcohol-free hair spray, eye makeup remover, foaming soap, and healthy hair rinse.  And--this nourishing homemade lip scrub.

If you ever get dry or peeling lips, you'll love this.

Awhile ago I shared with you my recipe for a Homemade Sugar Scrub.

It works wonders for dry hands, feet, elbows, knees.  Anywhere your skin needs a little renewing.

But today I am going to share a recipe for a DIY Lip Scrub.

I've had this recipe for quite awhile but had completely forgotten about it for some reason.

The Need for a Homemade Lip Scrub

Until the other day.

My lips were having a bad day -- Make that a bad week.

They had been peeling for awhile and it was getting really annoying.

I am not sure what all causes this but dry lips have plagued me my whole life.

(And yes, I drink a lot of water.  I have noticed that if I am struggling with candida, then my lips tend to suffer afterwards, but regardless, my lips are typically dry.)

I suddenly remembered that I had some of this scrub stashed in my cabinet so I went and grabbed it and rubbed some of it on my suffering lips.

A few minutes later  -- and -- ta da!  All the peeling was gone.  And what was left was soft lips that felt as smooth as a baby's skin.  Really!

And one very happy momma.  It may sound silly, but I feel a little self-conscious when my lips are peeling.  Anyone else feel that way?

Anyway, while I am sure my Homemade Sugar Scrub would work on your lips, this nourishing recipe is something special.

I got this idea from a blog of a former friend--but her blog is defunct now, so I had to remover her link from this post.

Anyhow, back to the scrub.....

Here is the super simple recipe.

The sugar provides the exfoliating, while the oil and honey hold everything together while providing moisture and nourishment to your lips.

This DIY Lip Scrub makes a fabulous Homemade gift. Paired with my Homemade Sugar Scrub this would be great.

These containers are basically the same as what is in the photos.

Small Glass Containers with Plastic Lids for Cosmetic Use

Compare to Store Bought Lip Scrubs

First of all, the ingredients in this DIY Lip Scrub are clean.

In other lip scrubs on the market, I saw ingredients like:

  • Lycasin (a kind of altered corn syrup)
  • Flavor (of course that could be almost anything)
  • Cornstarch (likely GMO)
  • Aluminum Lake Colors (no thanks - I don't want any more aluminum in my body)
  • Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone - rated a 5 on EWG's Skin Deep, this is basically an artificial fragrance, which I have many concerns about.

Second, the cost.

You can make this homemade lip scrub for next to nothing, compared with prices like $10 for .8 oz.

You're welcome :).

The Sugar Question

I wondered about this, and after doing an internet search, found that many others are too.

The question is -- if I am using a sugar scrub on my lips, what if I am sensitive to sugar?

This would apply to those with diabetes, candida, or other health issues.

My thoughts after reading the commentary online, and thinking about it is that it is probably a non issue since:

  1. You are only leaving the scrub on for a short amount of time
  2. Sugar most likely is not absorbed through the skin

However, contrary to my Homemade Sugar Scrub which is meant for use on your body (i.e. feet, hands, elbows, knees, legs, etc.), since you are applying this scrub directly to your lips, there is a good chance that some of it will go into your mouth, either because you didn't wipe it all off, or because you licked some of it off in the process.

It's great that this homemade lip scrub uses only edible ingredients, so eating it isn't a concern.

Once you've got your lips all smooth and lovely, you can top them off with some non toxic lip gloss and lip sticks.   I love this company's cosmetics.  They carry the only lip stick that I can wear - it's very sheer and light.  And they smell so good!

Homemade Lip Scrub Notes:

- Sugar

I used brown sugar just because I had some left from my sugar eating days :-).  Use xylitol or erythritol to stay completely away from candida-feeding stuff.)

- Shelf Life

Store in fridge to lengthen shelf life.  The shelf life will depend on the type of oil you use.  You can also give it a sniff before you use it and if it smells rancid, discard.

- Manuka Honey

I linked to a standard Manuka Honey in the post, but this Manuka Honey is the one that we really love. It is sourced in New Zealand (mostly pristine land) and loaded with amazing ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1 part Honey (or other liquid sweetener. Vegetable glycerine is great for those with candida, if you are concerned about eating some of it.) For added benefits, you can use Manuka Honey.
  • 1 part Granulated sweetener (See notes.)
  • 1 part Olive oil (other great oils would be jojoba, almond, or even coconut oil)

Instructions

  • Mix all ingredients together.
  • Apply a small amount to lips.
  • Rub gently into lips for a few seconds or up to two minutes.
  • If time allows, let the mixture remain on lips for a minute or two.
  • Wipe off gently with a warm, damp cloth (or you can just lick it all off, right :-)?)
  • Store the excess in a closed container.
  • Enjoy your smooth, soft, healthier lips :-)!

That is interesting. I have found that my lips get really dry when dealing with candida--it's actually horrendous. Have you experienced it re: b vitamins?

Have you ever added essential oils to flavor it? Do you find it needs flavoring? I'm comparing this to my favorite (https://blog.bulkapothecary.com/homemade-recipes/lip-balm-recipes/cherry-lip-scrub-recipe-2/) and just feeling like it might not taste as good (the resulting taste on the lips, not actually eating it)

Hi there. I have never done that but if you did you would want to be very careful to make sure to dilute appropriately. Since you would be possibly using this on an every day basis, you would want a 1% dilution. Otherwise it would be fine to do :).

Why does the shelflife of the cherry scrub say 3 to 4 weeks that doesnโ€™t make any sense to me and they say itโ€™s because of the sugar . Whatโ€™s the shelf life of this one ?

Hi there - what cherry scrub are you referring to? I can't make shelf life claims but it would depend on the shelf life of the ingredient with the shortest shelf life--unless you add something to extend the shelf life.

You can add 5 drops of grapefruit seed extract to extend shelf life for few months. Its a natural preservative.

Miki have you looked up if that is sufficient and if so what is a good source for how much you would need to preserve this amount of product? I'm reading for a soap or lotion you would need 05 and 2% of your total ingredients to effectively preserve this.

Which of the oil's will have the longest shelf life? Can you use coconut oil and melt it down yourself or is it best to buy the one that already comes in liquid form?

I haven't compared all oils and their respective shelf lives but some do spoil faster than others. If you use a liquid coconut oil the resulting product will be very runny.

Hello , I did a lip scrub using honey , sugar and olive oil . It works pretty well. If I leave it without using for a few hours the sugar goes down and the olive oil stays up . Do you have any solutions for this ?

It may have to do with the fact you used olive oil and honey. The recipes I've seen call for one or the other not both.

Hello there. I don't make shelf life claims but I keep mine in the fridge if I am not using it often. Honey is a good natural product that resists bacteria but still be careful since you are putting your fingers in it. Thanks for reading and hope you like it!

You can use salt but I have a tendency to like my lips so I would recommend sugar and if you want your lips to be even smoother and softer and healthier mix 1 part honey and 1 part oil and apply after scrub

I tried making this using coconut oil so I melted the oil a bit first to make it more of a liquid consistency. Then when I added the sugar, the sugar granules melted some. I realized I probably should've waited until the oil cooled down. It all became one liquid consistency. Do you think the scrub is as good if the sugar is melted? Maybe add more sugar? I used honey and then organic raw brown cane sugar.

I would think if the sugar dissolves there will be no granules left so it won't work. Just add more sugar and you should be OK :).

I've suffered for years with dry/chapped lips and have tried loads of different lip care treatments but nothing has made any difference until I read some reviews about the Somaluxe Lip Rescue. THANK GOD I TRIED IT. The SOmaluxe Lip Rescue really works! I found with other treatments such as vasaline I would have to reapply every half an hour or so, but I only have to reapply Somaluxe a couple of times a day or after I've eaten. It's an excellent product and I will definitely be using this for a very long time, only been using it a couple of days and my lips are already much healthier and hydrated, haven't seen them like this in years!

That's a generic measurement. So if you are making a small amount use 1/4 tsp as 1 part so each time you see a part you use 1/4 tsp. 2 parts would be 1/2 tsp in this case. Does that make sense?
