Why Make a Homemade Body Spray?

There are a number of reasons to make your own body spray, in addition to other homemade body products.

First of all, it’s so easy to do–so why not make it?

You can use all natural ingredients to avoid the harmful chemicals and artificial fragrances in most commercial body sprays.

By making your own custom body spray, you can make the fragrance according to your own personal preference without being locked in to what is offered online.

Of course you can save a lot of money.

In my opinion, the best part of making your own diy body spray is that you can have a feeling of accomplishment making something beneficial.

What Is a Body Spray / Body Mist?

A body spray is a hydrating mist with a light scent that’s intended to make you feel fresh and deliver aromatherapy benefits, but it’s not a deodorant nor a perfume. Body sprays are great for hydrating dry skin, and for delivering the added benefits of essential oils to your natural skincare and body care routine.

Ingredients in Commercial Body Sprays

Ingredients in store bought body sprays on the market today will vary of course, but here is a list of ingredients in one spray from a popular store. Note that I did find it just a bit shocking that you can’t see the ingredients in many of these sprays online before purchasing. Yikes.

Alcohol Denat., Water/Aqua/Eau, Fragrance/Parfum, Butylene Glycol, Albizia Julibrissin Bark Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Glycerin, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Flower Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ext. Violet 2 (CI 60730), Blue 1 (CI 42090), Red 4 (CI 14700), Red 33 (CI 17200), Limonene, Hexyl Cinnamal, Linalool, Butylphenyl Methylpropional.

Note that fragrance/parfum can mean literally who knows what. No thanks!

How to Use This Spray

There are a few different ways to use this body spray.

  • Body Spray (of course!)
  • Linen Spray – Simply spray your bed sheets, comforter, or pillow and enjoy the scent while sleeping.
  • Room Spray – This spray is a natural alternative to store bought air freshening sprays.
  • Perfume – You can definitely use this spray as a light perfume
  • Deodorant – The vodka works as an antibacterial so yes, you can even use this as a light deodorant!

Blend Ideas

Here are a few essential oil combination ideas to get your started. While some people recommend blending specific combinations of top, middle and low notes, but I say have fun and keep it simple! The sky’s the limit!

Here are a few options for making a body spray scent you love. You can choose which one(s) to make based on the scent you would like and/or the benefits of certain essential oils that you’d like to enjoy.

Calming Spray

Grounding Spray

Energizing Spray

Sleepytime Spray

Beautiful Skin Spray

Floral Spray

  • Lavender
  • Rose
  • Petitgrain

Safety Warning

Before using this DIY body spray, make sure to do a patch test of the spray on the inside of your arm to make sure that you don’t react to the ingredients.

Moisturizer Please

Though vodka isn’t as drying as isopropyl alcohol, repeated use can still dry your skin out.

So if you plan to use this body spray on your skin regularly, it’s a good idea to put a moisturizer on after to protect your skin. Adding some water to your skin first helps seal in the hydration.

Recipe Notes

Make sure to use only pure essential oils for this and any other project using essential oils. I recommend avoiding the use of fragrance oils, which are known to contain artificial fragrances, many of which have known associate health concerns. For more information on this, read this post on the dangers of artificial fragrances.

While there are different ways to emulsify essential oils, not all are as effective as others. This post on emulsifying essential oils goes into some of that information.

If you aren’t able to use alcohol for some reason, then a hydrosol is a good idea or you could use glycerin instead. Glycerin isn’t a great emulsifier, but it’s better than nothing.
