Wondering about mercury toxicity? Here's a story about how one woman recovered from apparent mercury poisoning. Some of the info in this post just might help you.

Horrible Health Problems
I struggled for many years feeling badly, so I was used to being tired. Sadly I was also used to being unable to keep my house clean and never catching up with anything.
But, I wasn't used to the debilitating headaches, insomnia, and generally feeling awful that rendered me unable to function.
I resorted to eating a lot of frozen pizza in an effort to “survive” and my house became even worse as I was having a hard time keeping up with even regular chores much less deep cleaning.
I know it sounds crazy, but it had to get that bad before I realized that something was seriously wrong.
I had grown used to the fact that sometimes I just didn't feel very well. Since doctors had never been able to help, I chalked it all up to stress. I went to quite a few doctors and got quite a few diagnoses and recommendations, and I improved some by addressing PCOS, liver health, infections, and candida.
Some supplements helped to improve my sleep and energy levels, but I knew I wasn't totally well. I still had weird abdominal bloating and fatigue (even though I had been treated for candida and infection), and my sleep and weight still weren't the best. I continued to skip periods and have other signs of hormonal dysfunction. So, I continued to research.
I read many stories of mercury toxicity and many of the mercury toxic people reminded me of myself: adrenal fatigue, hormonal dysfunction, anxiety, insomnia, liver problems, thyroid-type symptoms, candida, and chronic fatigue.
After a lot of research and prayer, I decided to have my mercury tooth fillings replaced with composite fillings.
I chose a dentist who specialized in removing mercury fillings and spent a lot of money to have my fillings removed. I didn't know 100% if this was “the answer,” but I went in the faith that I had done my homework and had peace from God that I felt I needed
Since removing my mercury fillings and detoxing, I improved by leaps and bounds!
For example, I had been eating a healthy nourishing diet and taking good care of myself for a few years, but I hadn't been able to lose the extra weight that I had. After I had my fillings removed, the weight just fell off. I wasn't “puffy” anymore.

My Experience with Recovering from Mercury Toxicity
Mercury does damage to the body in many ways. But there is hope! I recovered from chronic fatigue, polycystic ovarian syndrome, anemia, metabolic syndrome, headaches, and insomnia. Here are the steps I took to recover.
It's important to add that these steps may not be the ones that you need to take. Mercury can be very tricky, and each person's body is different. Yet, I do I feel that the way I chose to handle mercury was a very safe way to detox. I was concerned about damaging my body further so I chose to be thorough in the steps that I took.
First Things First
This is what I did to get my life back from mercury toxicity:
- Find Practitioners
I found practitioners who could address my mineral status and deal with the other medical problems that I had. Before I had my fillings replaced, I had already been treated by an integrated doctor for a gut infection. I had also been on bioidentical progesterone to help balance my hormones and had quite a few vitamin C IVs. Additionally, I was on a targeted vitamin and supplement program. - Choose Mercury-competent Dentist
There are reports of people getting very sick from having a dentist improperly remove a mercury filling, so it's important to carefully choose your dentist. Never let a dentist just “drill out”an old filling.Once those two things were taken care of I started working on helping my body get rid of the stored mercury, and heal from the mercury damage. Here are the 4 different areas that I addressed.
My Recovery from Mercury Toxicity
Mineral Support
This is best addressed way before the removal of the fillings. I had testing done through Metametrix Labs along with some blood testing. My practitioner put me on optimal vitamins and retested periodically so that I would know which vitamins were needed.
Minerals are vital and deficiencies can cause a lot of symptoms. I believe that many of the terrible symptoms from my mercury toxicity were due to the mercury displacing minerals. Most mercury-damaged people seem to do well on high quality B vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium (sometimes calcium also), vitamin D, trace minerals, and vitamin E.
Safe Mercury Removal
The day I had my fillings removed, I had an appointment with my integrated physician to have a vitamin C IV within hours of my filling removal. Vitamin C has been shown to alleviate mercury toxicity (source).
I swished activated charcoal around in my mouth when I got home to absorb any particles of mercury left in my mouth. I brushed my teeth with activated charcoal and swished and spit a lot. Then I took an activated charcoal pill and later on took another detox product. I also took liposomal glutathione to improve liver health, because having optimal liver function is important for supporting detox.
I did clay foot baths. I am now juicing and should have done this a long time ago! Juicing is wonderful for detoxing.
Address Candida
If you have issues with mercury, it's extremely likely that you have issues with candida. Some people will not be able to overcome candida problems until they work on ridding themselves of mercury.
Of course a real food diet is important. High quality meat, eggs and vegetables are helpful for detox. I avoided sugars and yeast. Vinegars can also aggravate yeast. I took anti-fungal supplements and rotated them.
Heal the Gut
Some people work on this while working on detox, but I found that I was really able to concentrate on my digestion after I had worked on detox for a long while, perhaps because my mercury symptoms were so much better. Finally, I could pinpoint what foods were bothering me.
I tested positive for Small Intestinal Bowel Overgrowth (SIBO), so I began a protocol and diet to treat that. Then I started supporting my liver with food and eventually juicing, and cut out food groups that I was intolerant to.
Other helpful therapies for healing the gut include l-glutamine, turmeric, probiotics, licorice, garlic, and of course candida fighting foods and supplements.
I know this list looks long, and it is! For me it was a very long journey back to health but I'm glad I did it!
Not All At Once
I didn't do all these things at once. In fact detoxing often happens in cycles. I would sometimes be actively working on something pertaining to detox. Other times I would just take my regular vitamins and minerals and eat well. I also want to mention that some people will not have to address all these areas. Sometimes, simply having a safe dentist remove the fillings can be the catalyst for healing.
I personally needed to address all these areas, but it has all been worth it.
No longer do I feel sick and exhausted.
I'm at a healthy weight, sleep well, and am able to keep up with my responsibilities.
Most importantly, perhaps, I am able to enjoy life again!

Have you heard about Mercury Toxicity before?
What do you think about this?

Kristie has had the privilege to be a stay at home wife (and then mom) for 18 years. Homeschooling became a passion for her after the blessing of her first daughter arrived. In 2010 Kristie's chronic health problems became serious enough that homeschooling was becoming very hard to keep up. Her prayers and research led her to health and then to blogging! Nowadays you can find Kristie busy in the kitchen making family approved allergy-friendly meals. Unless she's busy researching her next health topic or homeschooling!

I just last week found out I have high levels of mercury in my body. Ive been growing increasingly ill for abut 6 months now. It started when I was diagnosed with Mono and then after a few weeks of slowly healing I was suddenly hit with anxiety and insomnia. The symptoms grew to excruciating nerve pain all over my body, fatigue, depression, thyroid issues, chest pain, headaches, and manny more. I was told i was crazy and had many blood tests and scans to find no issues. Its been extremely difficult to put it lightly but i just started detoxing last week and all my symptoms seem exaggerated:( i don’t even know how i got these high levels of mercury since I don’t have fillings, i do eat sushi regularly though.
Sushi could definitely be it. Have you seen the seafood charts about mercury content in different varieties? I know Tuna and larger fish can be a huge problem. Glad you are figuring it out!
Did you do the fillings all in one setting with sedation, or did you do several appointments?
I also had that malady. I had terrible pains in my joints at night, like someone was cutting my legs and arms off…and pain in the daytime too. The brain fog was very challenging also.
So, I also had my silver fillings removed and got ceramic ones. I did many detoxes, juicing, green drinks, supplements. Walking 2 miles , 3 x a week helped also. I went to a NAET specialist and found out I was exceptionally allergic to metal, so I had several treatments…amazing results!
I’m much better now. I’m glad you are also better!
Hi! In 2001 I got sick with a virus that lasted 2 1/2 months. During this time I started getting lots of neurological symptoms. I could hardly walk (and only a very short distance), my left arm quit working, my words became sometimes slurred, and my handwriting was illegible among many other things. When the virus left my body I was still plagued with the increasing neurological symptoms. I continued to get worse and worse. I was basically dying. During the course of 20 months I saw 8 different doctors. Non of them had any help. I was wrongly diagnosed with many different diseases. A Neurologist told me to “see a shrink! There is nothing wrong with you”. It was a devastating time for our family. Our 16 year old daughter decided to homeschool herself so she could take care of me and do the housework. It seemed that everyone we came in contact with had some cure or advise but when a friend recommended The Nevada Clinic in Las Vegas we prayed about it and felt led to go there.
Long story-short… after returning home from 2 full days of testing we got a call saying I had very severe Mercury Poisoning. My level was 180. It should be 3 or below. They told me my levels were so high that I should NOT get my fillings removed or do any kind of chelation. That while those 2 thing might be great for most people with lower mercury levels-they would KILL me.
I’ve done all kind of detoxing in the last many years but have had to stop to give my liver and kidneys some rest. I am sooooooo much better, but still have health issues. I thank the Lord for sending us to Las Vegas and for the diagnosis and for the years of detoxing. I’m sure I would not lived long at the rate I was declining. (one Dr. said “dead people don’t have that high of mercury levels when they die from it”)
Wow- where do you think you got that mercury from?
Perhaps you can have your fillings removed and replaced now?
Hi,
I read your story about mercury on wholenewmom and I’m hoping you could tell me what chelation you think works best for Mercury detox?
I have nonstop vertigo, neurological symptoms like tremors and shaking, numbness and tingling in fingers and toes, anxiety and panic, brain fog with memory issues. I got all 8 mercury monsters out of my teeth as of a week ago. I’m already breathing better and daily heart palpitations stopped.
All of this mercury inside me is destroying my health, my will to live. But I want to try, maybe I can learn what to do to detox.
Please, please, tell me what supplements you believe helped you? Any advice to share from your experience?
Blessings
Melody
Thank you for sharing your experience. How are you doing with SIBO have you been able to manage it after metal detox?
I have never retested for SIBO, but I have been feeling really good. I have eaten a limited diet for a long time though. So recently I decided to add in some new foods. Many new foods I have done well with. I did happen to notice a reaction to peas the other day, so I am still working on food intolerances.
Thank you for your testimony Kristie. For all those suffering, I feel your pain, quite literally. I have to say though that my pain is subsiding. I wanted to share my story as well.
At 17 years old, I got my amalgams put in. Just two, but enough to do a lot of damage. I went through my 20’s with considerable amount of pain – chest pain in particular but also tightness in right eye and full ear feeling. I would crack my chest often, had difficulty breathing, anxiety especially. i could go on but I won’t.
Things got so bad it was affecting day to day life, my marriage, etc. I was determined to figure out what was causing my fibromyalgia symptoms so I looked up all the possibly causes and read about heavy metals. Last July I had my amalgams taken out by a biologic dentist and the results were dramatic!
i ended up breathing better, my lazy eye opened, i lost a good 20 or more pounds, my muscular strength increased exponentially, i was able to stay up longer, do more work (no more chronic fatigue), my married life and life with kids got so much better too. i didn’t need to crack my chest anymore and right now it feels like my network of nerves are reconnecting.
i should also mention in all this that i became sensitized to metals, not desensitized, but sensitized. Meaning touching metal was painful. once i realized this i stopped wearing anything metal (jewelry, eyeglasses, etc) i even avoided touching metal if possible (eating with my hands instead of utensils, etc). there are some scholarly articleso n this published in sweeden in late 90s that confirmed this existence in mercury exposed individuals.
This is the backdrop, I would like to explain what I did to get to a nearly full recovery. I am not yet fully recovered but believe I will be someday.
1. chiropractor – this was before i knew what the problem was – but it did really help get things moving again
2. tens machine – ultima neuro – matches the nerve impulse of the body to relax it and let nerves repair themselves
3. other physical exercise devices – i especially liked using the theracane and the foam roller but any massage was great too. It really stimulated more oxygen in my bloodstream.
4. DIET – this one was huge – I changed to eating just veggies and lean meat, mostly chicken, and plain spaghetti, nothing added. Later on, I added cilantro and garlic – powerful chelators. I read in the posts below that cilantro was not recommended for mercury detox. My experience with cilantro was strong as well. It sure did move things about but for me it was effective in the later stages of detox. i waited until month 5 or 6 before doing it knowing that i was in full swing chelation and things were moving on well. Right now I consume about one paste of cilantro a week and it does help me out considerably.
5. SUPPLEMENTS – my wife is a physician and she began telling me about supplements – i tried a few but the one that gave me the most success is neurogen by a hand surgeon fitzmaurice, google it, it’s got ALA that cutler recommends. I also take Gluathiamine and chlorella and magnesium oil, These were all recommended by the superman diet, see (Link deleted by Whole New Mom due to it not working anymore)
6. Reading posts – I have to say thet without the Internet I would not have been healed. No traditional doctor figured it out, I did, with the help of bloggers like yourself! It is my firm commitment to keep on going back to learn more and even when completely healed, to help others in my predicament. i think the ADA needs to go down for the evil it has allowed to occur under its watch!
7. Prayer – no real explanation needed here, but I do think it helps!
* a word about clay baths – for me due to my metal sensitivity, the clay baths were a lot to handle. the ionization ended up pulling not just the mercury out but other essential minerals. it left me feeling depleed in the long run. I will say that this was when i put in on externally. i had better results with eating it but that did cause some constipuation as well. i also think caution needs to be taken when using clay and do so slowly if extremely toxic like i was. .
I would be happy to go into any details of what I did to recover but I do think the following things are true:
– my recovery could be linked to the fact that I am in my mid 30s and besides this thing (doctor’s always said this) had perfect health
– i respond well to chelation – not true for everyone
– i had my amalgams removed by a biologic dentist – google this now – they have different protocol to keep you safe for removal such as dental dam, oxygen, etc.
therefore, i believe that you first must listen to your body before anything else – even a trained practitioner. Go slowly and increase dosage as your tolerance allows. Remember that the toxins are eliminated through your poop. If you don’t eliminate regularly this could be a problem. Fortunately, I don’t have that problem.
You may email at jsalas2162@gmail.com for any clarifications or questions.
Wishing you all the best of luck and God’s good graces on your road to recovery.
By the way, in July it will be my one year since removal of amalgams so my progress has been relatively quick.
I do think that it can be for others as well without too many other comorbidities.
Wow. Interesting. What do you mean about cracking your chest? I do find it interesting that you mentioned eating plain spaghetti. I would think that would be contraindicated due to the gluten and carbs?
Yes, prayer does work. Thank you! If you need me to I can remove your email address. Worried about you getting spam.
hi, thanks for the reply. So my chest would get so tight from no physical
exercise that I would just stretch it out and it would make a cracking
noise like how you crack your knuckles. Doing this was the only way to
relieve the pressure.
I have many food sensitivities. I get gas from almost anything but plain
spaghetti, especially veggie not necessarily gluten free agrees with me. I
think it has something to do with the sulfates. I am okay with some meats
but anything processed, forget about it. Doing better now though..
Dont worry about email address for now. I really want to reach out and help
those who need ot with my experience. If I end up getting too much spam I
will let you know.
Thanks again for getting back to me. I enjoy sharing my experience.
Hopefully together we can make a difference!
Oh my. Terrible. I appreciate your generosity regarding helping others. I hope we can make a difference as well!
My dentist during my childhood “found” 6-12 cavities every six months! For 12 years! Even though I brushed my teeth religiously! I think he was making a living off of my parents health insurance, and I was the victim. There’s no way now that I can prove it, but I think he was a quack and very unethical to do this. At that time, in the 1950’s and 1960’s no one knew the dangers of silver Mercury amalgam fillings.
Interesting read.
Thanks so much for sharing. I am hoping to get my root canal (did it 2014) and 8 fillings(6 of it I have had for about 20 years) removed or atleast some of the filled teeth removed by June.
Mine is the reverse because I have been flushing, detoxing, managing Arthritis, Vitiligo and treating Candida since October 2015, but before then I have been eating very healthy. I also battle shortness of breath, don’t know if they all link.
My root canal became very painful 2weeks after I got it, then calmed and came back really painful and uncomfortable after about a year, oil pulling with Coconut oil has been my Savior. I started taking Himalayan Salt I used to make it Sole.
Now that I have been on that natural health journey, would I still need to plan all of detoxing and management after removing the Mercury’s? Thank you
Hi there. Does the Sole help you? I have heard about that from others.
My personal thinking is that detoxing has to be done all the time since we keep getting exposed to toxins. I can’t advise medically, however. Hope that helps.
I have read through this and am curious what suggestions might be for an 8 year old girl that has high levels of mercury. She doesn’t use make-up, does not have the filling that have mercury in them etc. Other than our energy efficient light-bulbs, I don’t know where it is coming from. At any rate, I need to get it out of her.
Hi there. Other sources would be fish and well, you.
Vaccines are notorious for causing mercury toxicity in children. The mercury was never completely eliminated. There are many ways to acquire it though, including but not limited to in utero from mom’s fillings/vaccines, living near a cement factory or coal-fired power plant, fish, mercury vapor inhaled from broken high compact fluorescent lightbulbs, mercurochrome antiseptic, etc.
I have had excellent success eliminating mercury toxicity with low-dose oral DMPS using the Andy Cutler protocol method.
Thank you! I just signed up! And yes there was thimerosal in it. 🙁
I’ve seen specialists and I think I just want a naturopathic guide.
You’re helping as well. Wheatgrass has adverse effects? And Brazil nuts, I’m not sure. I just figured for now many veggies and fruits.
Thank you so much!
Farrah
Good! I’m listening right now. I’m so sorry that you are sick. My practitioner wasn’t keen on wheatgrass and when I took it I felt just terrible. So I stopped.
Cilantro is supposed to be good if just eaten and not taken as a supplement. I have zeolite in my store which I think really helped me and continues to do so. You can take a look at this post. I couldn’t believe it. I don’t know how much of my issue was mercury, however. I know that I had aluminum issues. https://wholenewmom.com/health-concerns/could-you-have-heavy-metal-poisoning-and-not-know-it-part-one/
I wish I could help more!!!!!! You might have other things going on as well – like adrenal and thyroid. Take care!
Hello,
Interesting article.
I believe I have mercury poisoning from a tetanus shot I received.
I want to be back to normal as well.
It’s painful. I’ve been seeing acupuncturists, did the infrared saunas but running out of money. May have a hair analysis to really get results.
I have to heal my gut lining as well because I had digestive problems beforehand. I don’t know which Doctor to see.
I know a naturopathic one since the other ones think I’m a young adult who just wants to go to the doctors. I am praying for guidance and signs.
Interestingly enough, I’m getting a lot more signs about what I should do with my interpersonal relationships. Please any advice would help! I’m even taking Brazil nuts once a day and wheatgrass but sometimes I forget. 🙁
Is there mercury in your shot? You can see here: https://www.fda.gov/BiologicsBloodVaccines/SafetyAvailability/VaccineSafety/UCM096228
I’m so sorry and I know how pricey it is. The hair analysis is hard to figure out.
Yes, the gut is important. Did you see the Heal Your Gut Summit going on right now? It’s free. https://wholenewmom.com/whole-new-budget/free-kindle-books-healthy-living-deals-jan-16-2016/
If you are taking the brazil nuts for selenium you can’t guarantee how much is in there. A pill is better. The wheatgrass makes me feel terrible. Hope this helps!
