Mold is terrible. It can make you sick and worse. If you have health issues that are unanswered, mold might be the cause.
Following is Andrea Fabry's Mold Story and it's a doozy. It's a story of sickness, discovery, and recovery. It's excruciating and scary to read, but it just might save your life, or of life of someone you know.

{I have “known” Andrea Fabry for a long time. She and her husband are radio personalities and I have listened to them on an off for [ahem] many years. We even went to the same university (but at different times). One of the most memorable stories I have heard is Andrea's – of her family's battle with black mold symptoms, how they found out where it was all coming from, and what they did once they knew.
Now you can hear it as well. I hope this helps someone out there get the relief they need.}
We were a relatively healthy family prior to moving into the home of our dreams the summer of 2000.
It was a 5500 square foot home, triple the size of our first house. We could see Pikes Peak from the upstairs window.
The home was perfect for our family of 10.
We knew little about medical problems.
We had been to the emergency room only once in our 15 years of parenting.
Within six months of our move, however, things changed.
The Fabry Family Was Changed Forever by Black Mold
Here's how:
– Our 6 year-old daughter was diagnosed with a seizure disorder
– another daughter’s food allergies escalated
– a bird died
– our dog developed diabetes
– I felt some slight neurological changes.
– Respiratory illnesses, fevers and ear infections became routine.
– Our ninth child was born in 2001 and immediately placed in neonatal intensive care for lung issues.
We thought nothing about the increased health challenges.
After all, health is random. Some people get sick and others don’t.
At least that’s what I thought.
The Mold Discovery
Two days before Mother’s Day 2007. I found a spot on the carpet in the corner of my daughter’s room.
We pulled up the carpeting and found some black-colored mold.
We called a mold remediator and he assured us that mold is harmless, and admonished us to not heed any of the mold “hype.”
We believed him.
Without testing, without masks, without any type of containment the workers tore into the wall, exposing massive amounts of mold – well beyond what we anticipated.
Mold had also been growing behind the bathroom wall, though we couldn’t see it.
Fans were blown directly on the exposed walls.
Black Mold Symptoms Progressed in the Fabry Family
Six Weeks Later
– Our 7-year-old son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
– Three months later our 11-year-old developed debilitating tinnitus in his left ear.
– His tinnitus soon developed into full blown vomiting and vertigo.
– By November he was in a wheelchair.
Six Months Later
Six months after the remediation:
- our 10-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a serious vision disturbance.
- the convergence insufficiency led to intense headaches.
- her personality changed.
- she could no longer read and was forced to withdraw from fourth grade.
Soon everyone in our family was struggling. Our issues included the following black mold symptoms:
- Brain fog
- Digestive problems
- Migraines
- Abdominal pain
- Rashes
- Memory loss
- Mood alteration
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Fatigue
- Joint pain
- Nosebleeds
- and even Black Tongues
In all, we saw 60 doctors in that one year.
I begged for help – especially for my son with vertigo. (Read Reagan’s unbelievable story here.)
We visited pediatricians, neurologists, ear specialists, ophthalmologists, and gastroenterologists. As specialists they showed little interest in my other children’s symptoms.
My role as a parent was questioned.
I heard statements like:
- “Your child needs tough love.”
- “She needs attention.”
- “Your child is just stressed.”
- “Don’t make your child’s illness about you.”
I was fighting for my sanity as well as my children’s health. Something was terribly wrong.
Finally, a friend asked if I was familiar with the term, “Sick Building Syndrome” and the thought began to nag me.
I called an environmental hygienist. However, he dismissed our symptoms saying mold only causes respiratory problems.
The New Mold Spot
In May of 2008, one year to the day after our first mold discovery, Colin, who was 8, pointed to a spot on the ceiling and asked, “What’s that?”
It was a water mark in a completely different part of the house.
Unknowingly and still believing our declining health was unrelated to our home, we called the same mold remediation company.
The workers tore open the ceiling and blew fans on the mold yet again.
I began to feel increasingly unsettled.
My husband, drowning in escalating medical bills, agreed to my request for a second opinion.
We called a new remediator who was shocked by the fans and the exposed walls. He encouraged us to call a hygienist to test the home.
We got our air samples back and found: astronomical levels of stachybotrys, otherwise known as “black mold.”
I knew nothing about “stachy” (pronounced “stakee”) but I now had a specific term to research.
It was immediately clear our symptoms were consistent with mold poisoning and mycotoxicosis (mycotoxin poisoning). They were black mold symptoms.
At last the dots were being connected.
We called a qualified company to undo what had been done. They wore masks and contained the areas properly.
We replaced virtually everything in the home, anticipating an end to this horrific chapter in our lives.
– We sought alternative health strategies.
– Our bodies responded.
– We were able to wean our 14 year daughter off of her seizure medication.

More Problems
However in the fall of 2008, when we turned on the heat, our health deteriorated again.
I made contact with a leading toxicologist in the field, Dr. Jack Thrasher, and he explained that even with remediation, a systemic mold problem like ours was virtually impossible to eradicate.
On October 4, 2008 we vacated our home. As advised, we treated the home like a fire: bringing nothing with us.

We found a smaller rental home close to our vacated home and started over.
While the loss of our home and possessions was devastating, I felt renewed hope.
– The kids would be back in school
– We would return to our life of activities, graduations, school plays and sporting events.
No more worrying about another trip to an emergency room.

Two months later, that dream died and our most challenging chapter began.

Affordable Mold Tests
If you are concerned about mold in your home there are a bunch of tests available, but there are only a few that I would personally use after talking with friends who are true experts on the topic. They are the following:
1. Got Mold
Got Mold uses the same technology that mold inspectors use when they do air tests, but this system is more affordable. Plus you don't have to worry about conflict of interest or trying to figure out who you can trust.
2. ERMI Dust Test
The ERMI is really thought to be one of the best tests out there. You can get it at Momsaware and use code MOMSAWARE to get a discount.
I personally prefer the Got Mold system as I think there are a lot of things that can go wrong with the ERMI. And you really should clean the area you are going to be testing well and then wait weeks before you do the ERMI – otherwise you are getting a lot of historical information and not necessarily current data.
Use code WHOLENEWMOM10 to get 10% off at Got Mold.
3. ImmunoLytics Diagnostic Tests
MicroBalance
If you are on a tight budget, then the ImmunoLytics Diagnostic Mold Test Kit is an option, but it does have drawbacks.
Petri dish testing doesn't test anything that doesn't fall into the dish. We did this kind of testing in our home, and it showed no real problem, but we had mold that actually gave me RA symptoms!
However, if you want to start with this, you can and for an even more inexpensive option, this 6 pack of testing petri dishes is great to see what kind of mold growth you might have going on in your home.
Micro Balance Health Products also has Mold and Mycotoxin Cleaners that will help keep the air healthy for your family. I've personally used these products and love them! Use Code wholenewmom to get 10% off your purchase.
CitriSafe
CitriSafe has the same tests at a lower price point, plus loads of other great products as well.
Moisture Meters
A meter like this one can be super helpful when checking your house for mold. You can check surfaces like walls and floors and ceilings to get an idea of what might be going on behind them.
We've used this meter often in our home and actually I think having a backup is a great idea too. It's been that helpful!
Dealing with Mold In Your Home
One thing that was super helpful to me when we had mold the second time, is fogging. Fogging with a good product that mitigates the effects of the mold and mycotoxins can greatly reduce your exposure and reactions.
Here are some products that I use and love.
Superstratum
This is a new impressive brand to address mold that we've used in our house for a few remediations, on the recommendation of a mold expert friend. Superstratum has a whole house system and chlorine dioxide bombs that you can even use to address areas when you can't get to them otherwise. As always, remediation is best, but you can only do what you can do in some situations.
Their HOCl is specially formulated to penetrate some surfaces more than the HOCl listed below. Use code WNM for a discount.
CitriSafe
CitriSafe has a great Mold Concentrate that is very effective. You can buy it and use it in any quality fogger. Use code WNM for 10% off.
Micro Balance has a good fogger that produces a 5 micron spray.
HOCl
HOCl is stronger than bleach and it's non-toxic. It's even used in hospitals.
Ecoloxtech is a great device for making your own HOCl at home without needing to buy pre-packaged ingredients. All you need is salt and vinegar.
HOCl kills mold. We spray the inside of our washing machine, shoes, clothing that's been in a moldy place (bags too), and sometimes bedding, and it's great for cleaning. So many options! Just be careful to keep it at the right strength because it can stain some things.
Force of Nature is another option for making HOCl. Most people use their pre-measured capsules but some find a workaround for that.
Toxic Mold Help
THIS book by Neil Nathan is thought to be THE best book on how to deal with mold toxicity related health issues. I'm reading it and it has superb information including ways to get started addressing this issue and the things that have worked best for his patients.
Do You Suspect Mold Could Be the Cause of YOUR Health Problems or
Have You Had an Exposure to Mold that Affected Your Health?

Andrea is a former journalist and the mother of nine children ranging in age from 28 to 12. Following a toxic mold exposure, Andrea and her family discovered the wonders of natural living. Andrea is the founder and president of momsAWARE, an educational organization designed to empower others to live healthy in a toxic world.

Hello folks, I wrote all of the information below, cutting, pasting, and clipping the information and links you require to help you, your family, and your home – recover from Mold and health issues caused by mold/mycotoxins, i.e., Mycotoxicosis, Stage One or Two. The standard therapy is detection, diagnosis, and treatment. Dr. Mark Shoemaker is one of the leading minds in how to cure yourself from mold. I was so messed up from spring 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, and half of 2015. I spent all of that time learning about what had damaged me. I thought I had suffering from Alzheimer’s or something it was so bad. I knew nothing about mold because up until 2011, I had no idea I was so allergic and hypersensitive to molds. By reading this information you just gained roughly three years of research, and I do research and write policies and procedures normally in Southern California within the educational and workforce investment systems, respectively.
Before you do this though, spend a couple of hours and you are going to SUPER CLEAN YOUR FRIG BECAUSE IF IT GOT ME, YOU CAN BE SURE IT CAN GET YOU. USE a solution of either Ammonia or 1 cup of bleach to every gallon of hot water with either Dawn or a specific refrigerator cleaner, but make sure you do this at the same time as you clean. Otherwise, either the kitchen will contaminate the frig or vice versa. You MUST go on in REMOVE ALL THE MICROSCOPIC MOLD IN ONE FELL SWOOP TO DECONTAMINATE YOUR HOME.
NOW: Once all of this is done, you’re going to decrease the moisture level in the home so the stuff doesn’t begin growing back. If you can afford it, buy on or two dehumidifiers; one for the bathroom, one for the bedroom, and certainly one for the kitchen.
Whatever you do, DO NOT BRING BACK YOUR STUFF FROM OUTSIDE AND PUT IT BACK BECAUSE YOU MUST ASSUME IT’S CONTAMINATED. BUT, IF YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST, YOU MUST WASH AND DRY EACH ITEM AT LEAST THREE TIMES BEFORE YOU EVEN THINK OF USING IT AGAIN.
THE SUN HEREINAFTER WILL BE YOUR BEST FRIEND BECAUSE MOLD HATES AND IS KILLED BY SUNRAYS AND SUNLIGHT. OH, AND INVEST IN SOME CREEPING CHARLIES AND MOLD KILLING HOUSE PLANTS. THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO KILL MOLD IN YOUR HOME. I NEVER KNEW THAT UNTIL I DID THE RESEARCH, BUT THEY HELP.
OKAY, THIS HELPS YOU.
AND, IF ILL FROM MOLD – DR. MARK SHOEMAKER – SURVING MOLD. VCS TESTS ON YOUTUBE CAN BE USED YOURSELF TO TEST YOURSELF. PLUS YOU CAN WATCH HIS VIDEOS AND ASK HIM FOR HELP TO GET YOU BETTER.
THE CURE FOR MOLD I FOUND THAT CURED ME SO I CAN WRITE ALL THIS IS CHOLESTRYAMINE BY SANDOZ. POWDER FORM, TAKE WITH 8 OUNCES OF JUICE WITH MAYBE A TBLSPOON OF PEANUT BUTTER. TAKE 3X’S DAILY FOR A WEEK. BOOM YOU’RE CURED.
TAKE CARE.
MARK
Use this version of the same formula to clean the walls, ceilings, fixtures, – EVERYTHING. It’s literally a war and you must win. So wipe and clean with this version: You’re going to create another solution of the same thing. The only difference now is, you’re going to reduce the 20 Mule Team Borax solution from 3 cups to ONE CUP. Now, get a regular bath towel, throw it into the bucket of solution, start wiping down the walls, including the ceiling if it’s smooth enough. If not, it’s okay for now. The ceiling high up is usually dry enough to prevent mold growth, so don’t worry about it too much. Now, use that bath towel. Wipe the walls down, get everything. After 30 minutes, you’re going to quickly notice, that in that one room of the house, you are going to begin to breathe better despite the solution smell because the mold in the room has been either killed or removed, so you’re going to immediately begin to feel like you’re making progress for the first time since the problem began.
As for carpets and personal effects. ASSUME IT’S ALL RUINED. Take the things you want, put them in COSTCO plastic storage totes, put them outside and the flip away from you. Find that place in the yard and start stacking stuff so it’s out and away. Now: the carpet WILL be full of dust, dirt, and dander. GOTO the Walmart, rent the Rug Doctor. Make sure you use the other portion of the Concrobium and put it into the water. Steam clean the crap out of those carpets, make sure you remove all the water from the carpets because you need time for the carpet to dry properly. Now, once this is done, create yet ANOTHER plastic entrance to the kitchen. Repeat the same process. Use solution One for the Floor. Use Solution 2 for the walls, ceiling, fixtures, etc.
Now, if you can’t afford an expensive (NEVER USED BEFORE AIR CLEANER, EITHER GET ONE OR YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN. JUST GOTO TARGET, BUY A AIR CONDITIONER FILTER THAT REMOVES MOLD FROM THE AIR, ATTACH IT TO THE SAME SIZE $25 DOLLAR BOX FAN, CUT A HOLE WHERE THE CORD GOES, USE VELCRO ON EACH CORNER, AND PLACE THE FILTER BEHIND AND ONTO THE FAN. THE FAN WILL NOW BE AS GOOD AS ONE OF THOSE $300-$400 AIR FILTERS AND BE BETTER AT REMOVIND MOLD SPORES FROM THE AIR.
NOW: TAKE A BREAK AND BREATHE AND FEEL BETTER IN THAT PROTECTED ROOM.
STEP 2- THE NEXT ROOMS BATHROOM, HALLWAY, LIVING ROOM, AND KITCHEN.
OKAY, YOU NEED WILL WANT ONE OF THOSE 3M PAINT MASKS, E.G., THE ONES WITH THE SQUARE PINK FILTERS, NOT THE BIG PINK CIRCULAR FILTERS. YOU USE THAT MASK TO WALK AROUND YOUR OWN HOME LIKE YOU ARE A SCUBA DIVER. EVERY BREATH NOW IS FILTERED AND WON’T ALLOW MOLD INTO YOUR LUNGS AND HARM YOU.
Now: Use the following solution to clean the bathroom. WhY? Because: The 20 Mule Team Borax is going to be used to create a coat on every surface in the bathroom, the floow, the walls, the doors, the ceiling, etc. Hey, fuck it. You know as well as everybody else, that the entire house is going to have to be redone, so just say fine and at least get your health back because you’re going to need to able to function to get your health back and work, so you have to do what’s necessary. So: Use this formula for the floors, and use the second (same formula, just less Borax to do the walls and ceilings.) Put the a big bucket, put it in the sink, fill it with hot hot water, 1/2 gallon of the Concrobium solution, add 3 cups of 20 Mule Team, add 1/4 cup of Dawn liquid detergent, add 4 cups of Lysol floor Cleaner. Use this solution to get in there and mop the shit out of that bedroom floor. Be liberal and use enough solution because the goal is to clean AND leave a coating of solution that mold DOES NOT WANT TO GROW ON. Let it dry.
Now, you’re going to need some cheap but powerful chemicals to treat the room. If you have a carpet, fuck it, remove it because it’s contaminated anyway. Then, you’re going to goto either Home Depot or Lowes and buy a gallon of Conbrobium mold killer solution. You’re going to use that as your base moldicide. Then, goto your local supermarket and buy 1, 2, or 3 boxes of 20 Mule Team (Borax is the mortal enemy of mold). It hates Borax, so we’re going to use it. Put the a big bucket, put it in the sink, fill it with hot hot water, 1/2 gallon of the Concrobium solution, add 3 cups of 20 Mule Team, add 1/4 cup of Dawn liquid detergent, add 4 cups of Lysol floor Cleaner. Use this solution to get in there and mop the ***** out of that bedroom floor. Be liberal and use enough solution because the goal is to clean AND leave a coating of solution that mold DOES NOT WANT TO GROW ON. Let it dry. Now, in about an hour, you’re going to do almost the same thing to the bedroom walls, the ceiling fan (careful about electricity), any built-in shelves, doors, whatever. You’re going to create another solution of the same thing.
Here’s what you do.
Tip #2: (Took me about 2 years to get in front of this, so listen up):
Neighbor gave me a contaminated window air conditioner. The stuff blew all over the house and microscopic mold was / is everywhere. By the time I realized what was happening, I lost my memory, walked around in brain fog, forgot many things, and developed weakness in my legs, like MS or something after eating a moldy blood orange left too long in the kitchen that was on the top of a bucket of fruit left out too long.
Okay, no time to play around, I understand your problem. Here’s what you do. Step One. Understand, there’s no way you can get the entire house cleaned up when you are poor, it just costs too much if you’re unemployed and having problems. So, do this: Pick one of the bedrooms and create a PROTECTED ENVIRONMENT.
You’re going to essentially clean the shit out of the room till it’s free of microscopic mold. Okay, take everything out of that room. Mold grows on everything I have learned and it’s almost impossible to get rid of it completely, so what you are going to do is assume it got into everything and just put it away. Start buying those totes from COSTCO for 8-10 bucks each and start putting your stuff into them, then put them either outside in a dry area that won’t get wet, or a storage shed in the back. Then, once that’s done and the room is empty, you’re going to begin protecting it by CLEANING IT.
By some of that cheap painting the house plastic at the hardware store. Create your own clear plastic door in front of the bedroom door. Use either Painter’s tape or masking tape, but seal it off from the rest of the house. The plastic is cheap, so you can do this.
Here is the Facebook Cover Sheet link. Much of the data I put there for my facebook friends and the public. If you need information on how to quickly abate your home environment, well, I had to learn how to do that too, as I was ALSO low on money, couldn’t work, and I needed to create a protected environment within my home and then – [WORKED MY WAY OUT ROOM BY ROOM UNTIL I GOT IN FRONT OF THE PROBLEM, USING SPECIFIC HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS TO START CLEANING UP THE INVISIBLE AND VISIBLE MOLD INSIDE THE HOUSE]. I HAD NO CHOICE BECAUSE EITHER I GOT IT, OR IT WAS GOING TO EVENTUALLY GET ME, AND I DON’T LIKE TO LOSE. If you have questions on how to clean up the place, send me an email for assistance.
P.S., but just in case you can’t email me, here’s a quick tip to help get you started.
Tip: Mold is an invisible microscopic plant that is very well adapted at messing us up. It’s a natural decomposer in the environment and at high levels, it can really mess you up if you are sensitive to mold, the way I am. My roomie doesn’t seem to be affected, but it’s ruined my life and put me in the hospital for a week, so don’t think I haven’t been where you are. I’m still here and keeping the crap at bay. I have plans to do – yet another sweep because the **** is like and WORSE than cudzoo. It really WANTS to live and it you won’t see it until it’s already created a small black, green, yellow, or tan colored colony. When you see ANY color, UNDERSTAND it’s taken hold in that spot in your home and it needs to be utterly DESTROYED.
Wow, so sorry to hear other folks having the same problems I experienced in 2011-2015. Happily, I like to do research, so I put my data and information out there for the other poor souls like I once was who do not do research, are feeling like crap, and need some quick solutions. So here, this is my unlisted youtube video, and I will give you my facebook coversheet(s) I created to help others such as yourself if you are in dire straights and need empirical data that will help you quickly get in front of the problem.
All the best, Mark

In 2010, **** was a promising “almost” legal professional living in Central California. Unfortunately, he was going through a period of extreme hardship in his life, divorce, death of his parent, his long-time pet, job loss, extreme weight-gain, and more. Suddenly, a helpful neighbor, seeing Mark spending hours upon hours in his small bedroom without a proper air conditioning, decided to “help him out” by bringing over a used window air conditioner; a device that once installed, dripped ounces of water, night after night, – filled with super concentrated amounts of moist air from the water damaged bathroom, located on the other side of the bedroom
…Black Mold – Alternaria drips into the carpet, foam padding, and onto the hardwood floor. There, it germinated, spreading millions upon millions of black mold spores, causing illness.
After all the health problems I have and our Yorkie has. Finding black mold in the house I know now after looking up what it can cause. That’s the answer to all our health issues. You can smell it’s so strong in our house I have actually thrown clothes away and it is terrible I have to shut our bedroom door our house ain’t but 1200 square feet and it’s a lot of mold in her home. The breathing the air quality is terrible I find myself shaking waking up with tremors every morning headaches really bad dizzy spells lungs bothering me. I hate the fact that seizures has started and I feel like I can’t think clearly. But we don’t have the money to move we don’t even own a vehicle we have tried everything it seems to get rid of the mold!! We need help so bad we don’t know what to do our bank account is completely dry I’m on disability my husband works but he don’t make that $17 an hour our home is not paid for and we are struggling bad we owe $59,000 left on our home. But we really need help we can’t move we don’t have the money we don’t want to lose our home because of black mold we just need it fixed. We don’t have the money to call in a mold specialist I really don’t know what we’re going to do I’m afraid our life is going to be shortened. I know with my health issues and my Yorkies ours won’t be long can someone please help
I’m so sorry for all you are dealing with. I am not sure what kind of help you are looking for. Do you have a church nearby that could help or relatives / friends who could take you in and you start over with nothing? Many people move out to start over. 🙁
If you can’t leave, a bandaid solution would be to fog your home regularly with EC3. It will get the mold counts down in the air and limit the mold that will inevitably spread into your home via stacking effect. When someone has a moldy home without the ability to move, I suggest fogging, candles, and HEPA air purifier and vacuum if possible to at least keep the air they breathe free of mold. Your body heals when you sleep, especially the brain detoxification, do what you can to have clean air around you when you relax and sleep when you are home.
