If you’re trying, or are interested in trying, hydrogen tablets and aren’t quite sure how to use them, here’s a quick walkthrough showing the best way to use them.
I've been using hydrogen tablets for almost a decade now and over the years I've learned a lot of tips to help you get the most out of this very interesting supplement.

Hydrogen tablets are very simple to use but some details are worth knowing so you get the most hydrogen out of the water and the most value out of your purchase.
For starters, here's a short video showing my son using one of my hydrogen tablets to make hydrogen water.
How to Make Hydrogen Water with Hydrogen Tablets
- Fill glass with 8-12 ounces of room temperature water.
- Drop the tablets in to the water. Allow to dissolve completely (typically takes from 1.5 to 2 minutes).
- Drink immediately.
Best Time to Take Hydrogen Tablets
You really can use hydrogen tablets anytime so there's really not a best time. Here are some options.
- first thing in the morning
- between meals
- before workouts
- or during periods of higher stress or fatigue.
Some people find hydrogen water energizing, while others report feeling more relaxed, so if they make you feel more energized, taking them before bed isn't recommended. Also since you're drinking a lot of water when using then, that could cause urination in the middle of the night.
One of the most important things to keep in mind is that using them on an empty stomach helps improve efficacy. I personally take a few in the morning, first thing, and then typically a few more in the afternoon when I get hungry.
Important Tips
- Use cool or room temperature water (not hot). Hot water can cause the hydrogen gas to dissipate more quickly, reducing potency.
- Let the tablet fully dissolve before drinking. You’ll usually see the tablet pieces rise to the top of the glass when the water is ready.
- Drink it soon after it’s ready for the highest hydrogen concentration. Hydrogen escapes very quickly into the air.
- Many people prefer taking hydrogen water on an empty stomach for best results.
- Don't use carbonated water as that disrupts the hydrogen-producing effect.
- My tablets contain about 80 mg of magnesium each, which is worth considering if you're also supplementing with magnesium elsewhere.

How to Store Hydrogen Tablets
Hydrogen tablets are sensitive to moisture which makes sense because water is what the tablets react to to create the hydrogen gas.
To help preserve freshness:
- keep the lid tightly closed,
- store away from humidity and heat,
- avoid wet hands when handling tablets,
- and reseal the container immediately after use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the magnesium in hydrogen tablets count as a magnesium supplement?
Hydrogen tablets often contain elemental magnesium as part of the reaction that creates the hydrogen gas. However, the amount of magnesium can vary quite a bit depending on the brand and formula.
Many hydrogen tablets contain magnesium as part of the hydrogen-producing reaction. The amount varies by brand. While my tablets contain about 80 mg of magnesium each, some of that magnesium remains in the residue left behind after the reaction. For that reason, I primarily use hydrogen tablets for hydrogen production rather than as a magnesium supplement.
Can you take more than one hydrogen tablet at a time?
Some people choose to use more than one tablet per day and/or more than one at a time. It’s best to follow the directions for your specific product and pay attention to how you feel.
Personally, I typically use 1–3 tablets at a time, most often 2, usually once or twice per day. Other family members prefer smaller amounts. According to some experts, taking more than 3 tablets at once likely provides no additional benefits.
Can hydrogen tablets upset your stomach?
Most people tolerate hydrogen tablets well, but some individuals may notice digestive discomfort depending on the ingredients used in the tablet, especially if they’re sensitive to magnesium. Starting slowly or taking them with a small amount of food may help. Neither myself nor anyone in my family has experienced this at all.
How many tablets are used in studies on hydrogen water?
The amount used varies, but quite a few were done on people taking about 3 tablets per day.
Can you dissolve the tablets in a sealed container?
An open glass is generally the simplest and most commonly recommended way to prepare hydrogen water from tablets. Some manufacturers sell specialized hydrogen bottles designed for this purpose. I personally prefer using a glass because the reaction leaves a residue behind and glasses are much easier to rinse and clean thoroughly.
