How to Use Hydrogen Tablets

If you’re trying, or are interested in trying, hydrogen tablets and aren’t quite sure how to use them, here’s a quick walkthrough showing the best way to use them.

I've been using hydrogen tablets for almost a decade now and over the years I've learned a lot of tips to help you get the most out of this very interesting supplement.

Hydrogen tablets are very simple to use but some details are worth knowing so you get the most hydrogen out of the water and the most value out of your purchase.

Best Time to Take Hydrogen Tablets

Many people prefer taking hydrogen tablets:

• first thing in the morning,
• between meals,
• before workouts,
• or during periods of higher stress or fatigue.

Tips for Best Results

• Use cool or room temperature water (not hot). Hot water can cause the hydrogen gas to dissipate more quickly, reducing potency.
• Let the tablet fully dissolve before drinking. You’ll usually see the tablet pieces rise to the top of the glass when the water is ready.
• Drink it soon after it’s ready for the highest hydrogen concentration. Hydrogen escapes very quickly into the air.
• Since hydrogen gas dissipates quickly, some people prefer loosely covering the glass while the tablet dissolves to help reduce hydrogen escaping into the air before drinking. I usually just place a small lid loosely over the glass.
• Empty stomach use is best for the most efficacy. Taking hydrogen water on an empty stomach may improve effectiveness. Many people prefer using it first thing in the morning or between meals. Waiting even a few minutes before eating may help. Personally, I wait about 5 minutes before eating.

How to Store Hydrogen Tablets

Hydrogen tablets are sensitive to moisture which makes sense because water is what the tablets react to to create the hydrogen gas.

To help preserve freshness:

• keep the lid tightly closed,
• store away from humidity and heat,
• avoid wet hands when handling tablets,
• and reseal the container immediately after use.

Does the magnesium in hydrogen tablets count as a magnesium supplement?

Hydrogen tablets often contain elemental magnesium as part of the reaction that creates the hydrogen gas. However, the amount of magnesium can vary quite a bit depending on the brand and formula.

Some products contribute a meaningful amount of magnesium, while others provide only a small amount. If you're using hydrogen tablets specifically for magnesium intake, it’s a good idea to check the supplement facts panel and compare it to your personal needs. My brand has 80 mg of magnesium per tablet.

Can you take more than one hydrogen tablet at a time?

Some people choose to use more than one tablet per day and/or more than one at a time. It’s best to follow the directions for your specific product and pay attention to how you feel.

Personally, I typically use 1–3 tablets at a time, most often 2, usually once or twice per day. Other family members prefer smaller amounts. According to some experts, taking more than 3 tablets at once likely provides no additional benefits.

Can hydrogen tablets upset your stomach?

Most people tolerate hydrogen tablets well, but some individuals may notice digestive discomfort depending on the ingredients used in the tablet, especially if they’re sensitive to magnesium. Starting slowly or taking them with a small amount of food may help. Neither myself nor anyone in my family has experienced this at all.
