Ingredients

  • 2 lemons (use whole if organic; peel if not organic; or use 4 tablespoons lemon juice)
  • 3 cups filtered water
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric (use less if desired)
  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon protein powder
  • 1 teaspoon baobab powder (optional, but recommended)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional but recommended)
  • 2 generous pinches salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (substitute mace for AIP)
  • pinch clove
  • 1/4 teaspoon stevia extract (see Substitution section for other alternatives.)
  • 2,000 mg vitamin C powder (optional)
  • ice cubes

Instructions

  • Peel the rind off the lemon(s) using a sharp knife. Leave as much of the white pith as possible as it has loads of nutritional benefits. I use the whole lemon, minus the seeds, if using organic lemons.
  • Slice each lemon into quarters. Remove the seeds, and place the lemon pieces into your blender. Add water and all of the remaining ingredients besides the ice cubes. Blend well.
  • Place the blended mixture into a quart jar. Add ice cubes and more water to fill the jar to the top. Stir or cover with a tight lid and shake before drinking.

Notes

  • Turmeric: Start with less if you prefer a milder turmeric flavor. Add more sweetener or vanilla to taste if needed.
  • Olive Oil: Extra virgin olive oil is my preferred oil. Unlike coconut oil, it won’t solidify in the cold drink, and I prefer it to more processed and expensive MCT oil.
  • Protein Powder: Use your favorite protein powder. Collagen can be substituted, but it is not a complete protein because it lacks tryptophan.
  • Baobab: Optional, but recommended for its tangy flavor and naturally occurring vitamin C.
  • Vitamin C: The 2,000 mg added vitamin C is optional. I prefer sodium ascorbate because it is less acidic than ascorbic acid. Acerola or another whole-food vitamin C can also be used.
  • Sweetener: Adjust the stevia or other sweetener to taste.
  • AIP: Substitute mace for nutmeg and use an AIP-compatible protein powder or collagen.
  • Lemons: Use organic lemons if blending the peel into the drink.
  • Make-Ahead Option: For an even faster version, make my Homemade Adrenal Cocktail Powder and keep the dry mix ready to use.
