Today I’m sharing one of the most helpful essential oils blends — a Breathe Easy Blend.  It’s an essential oils blend that we’ve used often in our home, and it’s a great essential oils for cough blend–great for both cold & flu seasons, plus for allergy season as well.

Among the worst things in life is feeling helpless when your child is sick.

One of my boys suffers from a bad cough on and off.  It used to be that when he would get sick, he would often develop a cough that was quite asthmatic. We had him tested for asthma several times, and the results were always negative, but the cough would still happen and at times it got quite bad.

We even got him an inhaler and had to use it a few times when he couldn’t sleep due to all of the coughing.

After I started using essential oils, however, I realized how many things they could help with.

I developed this DIY Chest Rub, and it has helped us through some sick times, but what really helped us was this Breathe Ease Blend from my favorite essential oils retailer.

Several times, when my son has had the beginnings of his very bad cough, I’ve brought out this essential oils blend and have rubbed some on his chest (diluted in a carrier oil, of course), and have also put it in a diffuser at night.

Each time this essential oils for cough blend helped him sleep better.  Which helps ME sleep better :).

And just last night, in fact, I pulled this blend out for myself as I had horribly stuffed up nose.

I alternated sniffing the Breathe Ease Blend and Eucalyptus Radiata and my nose started opening up (which was a HUGE relief).

I finally had a decent night’s sleep after 2 nights that were pretty horrible.

I highly recommend getting some of the Breathe Ease Blend from Rocky Mountain Oils, or you can make the blend yourself using this recipe.

DIY Essential Oils for Cough Blend Notes

Please careful about using this essential oil blend for young children. Here are some safety tips about Eucalyptus and Peppermint from an essential oils expert, Robert Tisserand.

These individual oils can be used for other applications, so you won’t be wasting by buying them separately.

Common Uses for Oils in the Essential Oils for Cough Blend:

Peppermint: I use peppermint regularly for my DIY Hair Growth Blend, or in these delicious Grasshopper Bars.

Menthol is the ingredient in peppermint oil that is thought to help soothe a cough. Interestingly, in this study, it was determined that although menthol really doesn’t relieve coughing, people who use menthol feel better using it.

Ravintsara: Also used in my DIY Hair Growth Blend.

Marjoram: Many uses but I have read it’s helpful for sleep issues including snoring

Eucalyptus (Radiata and Citriodora): Great for opening nasal passages, as an insect repellant, and more.

Spruce: cleaning, dealing with stress, and sadness

Myrtle: immune system strengthening, liver and gall bladder support.  It’s a safe alternative to Eucalyptus.

Pine: supports good circulation, might help you not perspire as much (no kidding!), and has a great “Christmastime” scent

Note: Due to the presence of 1,8 Cineole in Eucalyptus Radiata, do not use this blend on children under 3.  You could use Eucalyptus Citriodora or Myrtle instead.

  1. I disagree with your choice of best EOs. I was a customer until a blend went rancid too soon after purchase. Then I started checking my other singles and they all smelled off or had lost their scent. Eden’s Garden has been my go-to ever since.

    1. Hi there, Laurie. Oh no – what happened? Did you contact them about the blend? Please do let me know. I have to revisit this topic. Just been buried w/ so many things!

  2. Hello I stumbled across your Blog yesterday looking for the BEST Essential oil company & Thanks to your WONDERFUL blog about them I decided to go with Rocky Mountain Oils like u suggested!
In fact I just placed my 1st order today!
My Question though is do u recommend a type of diffuser? Ive been looking at them on Amazon and have found some really nice ones with affordable prices but there are sooo MANY I’m not sure which ones the better one for my money! And need one to run a good while so am looking at the bigger capacity ones, I even saw one with a Blue-Tooth connection to play music too for like $39.00. Can u help me out?

    1. So the company that I work with has a number of diffusers. I think it depends what you want. The ones that only use oil are very effective for large spaces. The water ones are for smaller spaces. If going w/ the water one, you really should look for one that goes at least 8 hours (for overnight) and that has a timer. I don’t like Blue Tooth b/c that exposes you to more EMFs. You can read some more about that in this post: https://wholenewmom.com/health-concerns/smart-meters-emf-smart-meter-fires-smart-meter-dangers/

  3. I make a similar blend, but instead of mixing with a carrier oil, I put a few drops on the pad of a plug-in diffuser and plug it into a receptacle near our bed. Works great. Just remember to unplug when you get up.

  4. Just FYI, peppermint should not be used on children under the age of 6 years because it can repress breathing. If you would like to learn more about using essential oils safely, go to Using Essential Oils Safely on FB. It is a wonderful resource group run by certified aromatherapists whose only goal is to keep you and your family safe while using your EO’s. They don’t care what brand you buy, they just want to help you use them safely.

    1. Hi Sue- thanks for writing! My understanding is the Robert Tisserand says no peppermint for children under 3, but you can diffuse and use topically up to .5% from 3-6. Do you know differently? Thanks! Just so you know, that group does have affiliate links all over it. I’m not saying it isn’t biased but that’s just for your information. Thanks!

  5. Just wonted to thank all the questions answers given was the ones I needed to hear..about allergy relief and what Is the best place to buy it safly…and still not so high…I haven’t started yet….there is one many two questions not on allergies.but hormone help .and stomach help..? Well thank you and God blesses…Susan..ps I’ll be checking in later if you have any information..

  6. Wow Adrienne , such great information . I too have started using RMO . I am looking for some kind of book on the use of oils . Do you have a favorite ??

    1. Thanks!

Your question is one that is asked often on my blog. I need to write a post about it!

Most of the EO books are very academic. They are helpful, but they can be “too much.” My favorite practical books at present are:
the one at the bottom of this post from NYR Organic: https://wholenewmom.com/what-to-buy/best-essential-oils-company-young-living-review-doterra-review/

and the one at the bottom of this post. https://wholenewmom.com/health-concerns/are-essential-oils-a-scam-a-skeptical-look-at-thieves-oil/

I plan to check out more, but many seem to be not as useful. There are negatives about both of the above books, but mainly I really like them both. The NYR Organic one is full of fabulous knowledge (the author is very well versed in oils) and is really a pleasant read.)

      I hope that helps!

  7. I know it says not to use on children under 3.is that for topical only? could it still be diffused with young children around?

    1. Hello Sara. This is what Robert Tisserand say about Eucalyptus oil. Hope this helps!

These are two of the most effective essential oils for respiratory infection and congestion, but too much can be quite dangerous, especially for infants. (“Eucalyptus”, includes E. globulus and E. radiata.) Because of the 1,8-cineole in eucalyptus and the menthol in peppermint, these oils can slow breathing, and cause neurological problems, but there are safe and effective levels of use. For children of 3 and under, peppermint is best avoided altogether, and eucalyptus can be diffused, or used topically at up to 0.5%. For children aged 3-6 both oils can be diffused, and used topically at up to 0.5% (peppermint) and up to 1.0% (eucalyptus). Other oils that are useful but safer for children include pine, spruce and rosalina.

  8. This blend looks great. I’ve never used Ravintsara before. But we’d never made it through cold season without oodles of eucalyptus and peppermint oils. If we’re really congested, I drip in a little sweet orange oil to help break up the mucus.

      1. I don’t personally notice a huge difference with the sweet orange but my kids do. If I’m preparing a tub of chest rub I don’t add the sweet orange but the littles often request it. Especially when they’re very congested, Then I mix in a drop or two to a handful of already prepared chest rub.

  9. Thanks for the recipe — I am going to make this tonight! Does this work for phlegm or do you have an alternative solution for that?

    1. You are so welcome! Many of the oils in the blend are said to work to help loosen things up so I think it should be helpful. Please do share how you like it! I’m still getting better on this end :).
