I bought a few from Country Life Natural Foods - I live in the Midwest and I have a co op with them. I also got 1 free from a store and then others are from ordering large 5 gallon sizes of coconut oil from Tropical Traditions. Once the coconut oil is gone I use the pail for storing beans :).

Your article is the best, just one question is the pic above the one your using to store your fruits cause it really looks pretty.

where do you get your bulk food storage buckets? I've been getting smaller versions at Gordon's but don't remember seeing super big ones.

I bought a number from Country Life Natural Foods. Then I have a few from other bulk purchases that I have made....bulk honey and bulk coconut oil. From the comments on my guest post at Kitchen Stewardship, a few readers commented that they were successful getting them from bakeries and cafeterias. I also have the number of a family here who sells them CHEAP out of their home on the West Side of GR.

This post is fantastic! You are full of great ideas and I'm happy to have found your blog through KS. My family rents, and we haven't stayed in one place more than a year for a number of years, so we haven't invested in a deep freeze, though that's high on my list of "some day" wants. I grew up in Wyoming and my family had 2 deep freezes. My dad hunted in the winter and grew a garden in the summer and we made the most of what we had that way, freezing and canning and dehydrating! I can't wait to do the same for my family.

Thanks for stopping by! We too, rented for awhile, and it sure was hard to do a lot of things that we do now. You could possibly get a smaller freezer that would fit in your place. Just yesterday, in fact, I saw a small one at someone else's home. It only came up waist high and held quite a bit of food. Might be a good investment for you at this point in your life! You have such a great model in your parents! What a blessing!

Hi Adrienne...love your blog. Found you through KS. I am wanting to purchase new mixer (to make bread mostly), and a Vitamix blender. Does the Vitamix grind grains well enough or would you recommend a mill? Also, what mixer do you recommend...? Thank you.

In my opinion, the Vitamix is fabulous, but not for grinding grains. I don't think it grinds fast enough, enough quantity, or fine enough to do the job. I'd be happy to tell you all of the reasons why I love it though! It does so many things well and has really saved our family a TON of money and time. I am going to be doing some more posts on it soon. Did you happen to see my posts on Homemade Coconut Milk or Making Your Own Coconut Butter?

I would recommend the Nutrimill. I have owned both it and the Whispermill. I may have a used Wmill for sale soon too :).

Regarding a mixer, I personally like the Bosch. I have an older model and don't use it much though b/c we had to go gluten free. Not sure if that is going to be changing anytime soon. So I guess I may have a used Bosch for sale soon too, eh? 🙂 I'd be happy to tell you more about it. The model I have is compact enough to store away so you can free space up on your counter, but it is really powerful and needs bread to perfection. My homemade bread was the hardest thing about going gluten free.

Let me know if you have anymore questions!
