Traditional Tuesdays Logo

Well, after my bean cooking fiasco last night (you’d think after all of the years of our being almost vegetarians that I’d have been cooking down), I really need some great cooking ideas. So – bring them on!

And you can see on my Facebook Page what I am talking about in case you missed it. Hint: It’s a great recipe for a very late dinner!

Looking forward to what you all will share!

Welcome back to our Nutritious and Delicious Linky Blog Hop — Traditional Tuesday!

What is Traditional Tuesday? Well,

  • if you are a blogger, you can share your whole food related tips on this blog and it will be shared on all five blogs

Here is some more specific info:

  6. This week I am sharing What is the GAPS diet and why we are doing it. A story about our healing and how GAPS is curing my sons autism!

    http://ournourishingjourney.com/2012/01/27/what-is-the-gaps-diet-and-why-we-are-doing-it/

    Thanks for hosting!!

    • Thanks for sharing, Linnae! We’ve been contemplating GAPS but I am not sure if I’ll proceed. I have some mixed feelings about the food list and questions about inclusions and exclusions – like some of the included beans and the honey and dried fruits which are real no nos when it comes to candida and gut health, from my understanding. How have you seen you son heal? I personally have gone grain free just this past week due to some changes in my health and I am happy about how I am feeling. I am interested in hearing more about your son’s progress. I don’t know if you noticed but my son has Asperger’s as well. Take care!

      • I really love the GAPS diet and find that a little fruit isnt a problem for my son. We rarely eat beans because of the high carbohydrate content. I think in moderation these foods are ok- for us anyway. When I first started on the GAPS diet my son ate pretty much only what I ate, but lately (since thanksgiving) we have slacked off a little and he is eating some processed meats that arent GAPS legal (still organic/ nitrate free though), more fruit than normal and not enough fermented foods and I can see this becoming a problem- he’s starting to get more anxious and can’t think as clearly and he has developed a rash on his arms. For this reason we are going to do the intro diet in a few weeks and be more strict about the diet. I have seen enough evidence that it works and when he is off it, some of the problems come back, so I know its food related. While he still has a long way to go, he has made so much progress, its really incredible. Two years ago my son could barely carry on a conversation, he wasnt able to put his thoughts together to form cohesive sentences, he had extreme sensory processing issues which made it difficult for him to even wear clothes (he only wore sweat pants and white tanks even in the middle of winter), he mostly lived in his own mind and prefered to be alone, he was completely oblivious to his surroundings and often darted out into traffic and he developed hyperventilating as a self-stim. Since we changed his diet (even before GAPS- but he has made the most progess on the GAPS) first eliminating gluten, then sugar, then dairy, then GAPS its almost as if his mind is finally clear from all the crap and he can think and carry on a conversation because he can actually form sentences, he no longer has the extreme sensory issues and he wears jeans and tshirts like kids his age, he enjoys the company of others. My grandmother said that her favorite christmas present this year was that he actually participated in the festivities- which he has never done before! And, while the hyperventilation and anxiety are not completey gone it is very rare now. I should say that my son also does Occupation therapy for hte sensory needs and I am sure that it has helped as well. Most of his progress has been since we started the GAPS though. :) Sorry this is sooo long!!

        • You don’t have to apologize for length at all. These kids have a lot associated with them and I am glad to hear it! I need to venture into the fermented foods again. I really haven’t done much with them since I was having reactions to them. Time to start again- what do you do the most of and do you make it yourself? I would like to try coconut yogurt since my son is allergic to dairy. He has progressed a ton as well. He is still eating grains, but no gluten, no dairy since birth and no sugar nor fruit now. I am wondering also what the issue is with processed foods if they are nitrate free? My son occasionally has nitrate free hot dogs, but that is it really. We eat pretty clean. I think we saw the most progress since going sugar free and now he is on a metal detox mineral rebalancing program that we are all doing and I am seeing great progress for myself. Take care and I hope to see you around again!

          • :) for the fermented foods, I do all sorts but my son usually only eats the sauerkraut, pickles, water kefir, coco water kefir and pickled ginger. What kinds of reactions did you have to the fermented foods? I had a weird reaction to kombucha recently. Regarding the processed foods, most of the ones he loves do have some sugar which is a no-no on the GAPS diet. I tried the applegate hotdogs which don’t have sugar but he doesn’t care for them. I heard there are some great brands that don’t have sugar, so I just need to do some searching. I think sugar is a big trigger for my son and I certainly am seeing that when we allow even this small amount in his diet that it wrecks havoc on his system. We still have a lot of healing to do. I am curious about the metal detox. In the GAPS book she talks about detoxing using juicing and certain juices actually help with detoxing metals. I haven’t tried it yet, but I am planning to start that soon as well. What typs of detox are you doing? Its so good to hear that you are finding things that are working for you and your family! I believe we are all biochemically different and not everything works for everyone, we just need to find what works for each of us. :)

            • Hi Linnae. I tried a strong fermented drink to deal w/ candida and it made it flare badly. It was awful. All my candida symptoms came back and it was clear to me it wasn’t die off. My practitioner said to lay off for awhile. She specializes in chronic fatigue / adrenal burnout and detox. You can find a link to her in my adrenal fatigue post. It’s called Nutritional Balancing and it is really fascinating. I have seen others healed by this and I am getting better and seeing the metals come out in my hair and my husband had some really remarkable results too. My son has stopped getting headaches and growing pains and others have had similar results. So far I’ve had 3 very long term conditions clear up. If you are interested after reading her info I’d be glad to tell you more. I will be posting on it soon and doing an interview w/ her. I get nothing from referrals. I am just thrilled to tell others. She is very reasonable and the fees include unlimited consults which is unheard of. We eat the Coleman hotdogs from Costco. Just 1 g sugar. I rarely eat them but my kids do. Theresa (my practitioner) says the 1g is OK. Stay in touch!
